The AMD Driver Thread

This is the issue I was talking about before. Check out 0:55 seconds onwards vs 2:37.

I'm not sure why running at 80fps+ is causing loads of strange stutter but Vysnc at 60 is fine :o It never used to do this it was only with the more recent drivers to my knowledge or it could be an issue with Windows 10.

Iam getting the exact same thing high frames, 60-70 FPS then dropping to 20FPS
Same on bf4 at 120FPS then dropping to 20, all at 4K using Fury x and 31 inch samsung pls monitor

I have the same issue with bf4 and gta 5 high frames then dropping to 20 fps, Vysnc not sure If i have it on are off tbh, were do I check.

Have ,
Fury x
Samsung 32inch pls 4k monitor.

The problem with me though is that they aren't drops. Steam overlay, fraps etc are still reporting 70-80 fps the game is just stuttering like crazy. Which is why I'm thinking something Windows side is running at 60hz and the game in Dx running unlimited it hitching between the two refresh rates causing it to bog down/desync or whatever the hell its doing.

Is this isolated to one game or all games?

its most games, even if i run it at max settings @1080 or vsr 1440p

does anyone know why my bottom card runs at 99% usage and my top card at around 80-90% usage, it happens in most of the games i play, i got the 15.7 drivers

It was a consequence of ULPS when I was running my 7970's. Options to fix this was either to enable "Unified monitoring" in Afterburner, which duplicated GPU1's usage onto the GPU2 graph, or to disable ULPS and get accurate figures. As I liked the second GPU turning off when I wasn't gaming, I just left ULPS on and ignored the anomaly. Doesn't happen with my 290's, so think this was a GCN 1.0 thing.

i have ulps disabled and i will have to check tomorrow if i ticked unified monitoring, my last pair of 7950's i had was both at 99% @1050/1500, with the same cpu, hopefully its just i have not ticked that

On a very different side topic...

What are AMD's Linux drivers like now?
Back around the launch of the Windows 10 Preview I installed SteamOS on one of my PCs (FX-8350 @ 4.5GHz, 8GB RAM, 7950 @ Stock, SSDs only).
Playing Dota 2 @ 1080p I was getting around 50fps (if memory serves) with the settings maxed out (I think).
Using the same hardware in Windows 10 Preview I was able to get over 100fps @ 1440p with everything maxed out.
Having recently looked around the internet Valve apparently got their Source engine running nearly 15-20% faster on OpenGL in Linux than on DirectX in Windows.

So to me it seems the issue was AMD's Linux drivers. So have they improved?

With Windows 10 nearing release I'm guessing the Windows 10 Preview will stop, so I'll likely move the PC back to Linux (will probably go Ubuntu rather than SteamOS though), so wondering if it will still be in any way viable to play the games with Linux support?

That was more of an issue with them using a newer version of OpenGL compared to using DX9. With the newer version of OpenGL being equivalent to DX11.

So essentially the newer OpenGL had lower Driver overhead and is more capable then DX9.

Essentially they could have improved performance in a similar fashion if they jumped to DX11 over DX9.

Their linux driver has vastly improved tbh with the 15.5's and 15.7's.

I have posted iirc in this thread the jump they have managed.
This is with the 2xx series cards, I cant comment on others but I have read a few with older cards going back to the 5xxx series have seen improvements too.

Edit:

Found some

Theirs another one with a jump with the 15.7's but lost it sorry

Well that's good to know.
My other option is to put an Nvidia card in there (when I eventually get my FuryXs). Not sure what the Nvidia drivers are like in Linux either though.

EDIT:
While I'm on Windows 10, are AMD driver updates still being pushed out through Windows Update or do I need to get them from the website now they're out for Win 10?

If you look closely it still stutters with vsync on just seems less. Ive been fighting this issue on both win 10 and win 8.1 my solution ended up being a downgrade to win 8.0 with all updates. Stutter is now gone and gameplay is ffing smooth again.. I dont want to be on 8.0 but i much less want stutter in my games..

New Windows 10 driver available through Windows Update, might have fixed the VSR issue some cards had in Cat 15.7, as in no VSR check box for 7xxx or R7 265 cards.
