The AMD Driver Thread

I was playing Alien Isolation for a couple of hours last night. Silly smooth 60fps frame cap, with 30-40% GPU utilisation, then in one area it spaz'd out and went to ~5fps for about 3-4 seconds. Could this be related?

Not sure really!

I was playing for 20 mins this morning and watched it creep from 4gb to 7.5gb. At this point, I closed the game down and the usage dropped.

The 2 times this has happened, the system has been unrecoverable and I've needed to reboot.

I'll have a look after lunch. I have 32GB ram, so would be interesting watching it fill up.

Keeping an eye on this folks. If anyone else notices similar behaviour, please shout.

Anybody tried AMD Catalyst 15.X (14.502.1002) ?

I'm 'dying' for a Dying Light driver.. Sorry.. ^^ This one any good?

*EDIT*

Installed them, definitely a newer driver, let's see how these fare in games..

Guru3d forums have a link for 15.x drivers.

It's the Alienware Amplifier driver, not recommended for normal desktop users. Not sure if VSR will work on this driver either.

Just want to say guys the feedback is appreciated and it is being taken onboard. Of course i can't go into specifics, but as soon as the driver is ready I'll post about it here. I know it's been a while since our last update, but we want it to be as good as it possibly can be.

Can only look over in the nvidia driver thread and smile when I think of all times people said nvidia drivers are just better :)

Have said that myself too :/

@ eyetrip. I also like the fact we have an AMD rep giving advice/helping out. The brief time I was with nvidea someone called NVrick popped in then bolted in the middle of the vram thread. This is actually 1 of the reasons I came back to amd.

Great to hear, thanks Sprite. I try my best to be around to help as much as time allows. :)

Titanfall.
SWTOR.

Just two that I play where Crossfire doesn't work properly or scale well.

Titanfall isn't particularly demanding, yet I find myself having to tone down AA.

I have been asking Matt for some time for work on these but as of yet nothing has been done by AMD.

I've passed on your feedback S2KIP, don't worry. As and when i get any update regarding improvements to these titles, I'll let you know.

Add Watch Dogs and Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition to that list for me. Tried Watch Dogs with 2 cards (single screen @ 1080) and it was choppy and much worse when driving. Custom profile disabling Crossfire and it's smooth as anything. Sleeping Dogs DE doesn't have a Crossfire profile yet, and forcing the normal Sleeping Dogs one game me much lower frame rates than the normal game and my GPU usage was bouncing all over the place.

I love having a Crossfire and Eyefinity setup, but find it really frustrating when a game doesn't use both properly. Some games (Watch Dogs) I'm forced to play on one screen using one card like some kind of Neanderthal! :D

I've already raised an issue with Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition Stu, however in the meantime please try AFR Friendly as a custom Crossfire profile in this title.

Spent hours getting CF working on SD: D the other night.

The default AMD profile doesn't appear to work. I get both GPUs dithering around 50%. Create a custom profile and set to 'AFR friendly'. Seems to work well. Sleeping Dogs can now hammer both GPUs at 95%+, and I get great frame rates.

Excellent, as i suspected.

If and when i have more news about an AMD Crossfire profile for this game, I'll post about it here.

Hey everyone,

I've not used AMD cards in a good number of years, but I'm extremely tempted by a pair of R9 290s right now (able to return 970, would be doing so for reasons of buyer's remorse/can't afford to SLI).

My question is how widespread are crossfire profiles, and how quickly do they surface?

From what I have gathered reading here it can be a bit hit-or-miss and take a good amount of time to get them out, but when it does work scaling is generally great, as is the frame-pacing. Am I wrong in my observations?

Finally, would there be any impact of running 5760x1080, or is that mostly unrelated to drivers?

Thanks for all your advice guys, and sorry for jumping in to ask this! If it's in the wrong place just let me know and I'll not do it again :P

Chris

Hi Tacitus,

Crossfire works well in most titles, however there are some games that are just not multi gpu friendly. Generally though, these games are in the minority.

If a big title launches without a working Crossfire profile, then rest assured we work hard to get one implemented as soon as possible.

One thing to consider is that sometimes a Crossfire profile may not be available at the launch of a game for many different reasons, It's not always the case that we just don't have it ready. In some instances there may be an issue with the game that needs fixing before we can enable safely enable Crossfire.

Our 290 graphics cards are well suited in Crossfire to high resolution gaming. You will have a lovely gaming experience. :)

I got bad lag with VSR (3k) in Elite. I put it down to a single GPU not quite being up to it. Looking forward to the crossfire profile..

That's usually the most likely explanation. I remember using Battlefield's resolution scaling with 2x290P cards at 150% =4K from 1440P used to cause me massive input lag, even though fps were around 60.
