AMD probably know the issue with the black screens and are working on a fix but if they don't I think from my short time using one I figured out what it is.
There is some situations like when you boot a game up or switching to full screen or changing resolution where your screen will go off and come back on. There is also a couple of games out there where simply switching between using the mouse and controller can cause your screen to go off briefly.
On the nvidias this isn't an issue it always stays in desired resolution.
On these 5700xt if your screen flicks off like when you boot a game up it doesn't always stick to the same resolution when it comes back. Not only that it seems to edit the games and windows files to the new resolution and hide it from you. You can be in a situation where it's putting out a 560p or 720p signal in game and desktop but every thing in game is telling you it's still in 1440p.
If your monitor doesn't support the resolution you are screwed you have to reboot.
For example on red dead redemption sometimes it would boot 1440p just fine. Other times it would say 1440p but be really blocky like really low resolution. The game, the tv and desktop were all saying 1440p, but it clearly wasn't.
When I eventually grow tired of the 5700xt issues (resolution, hdr, freesync all temperamental) I put my gtx 1080 back in, I went through and tested a few of my games and they all booted and worked first time as you would expect them to.
But the weird thing is when I booted red dead it still looked the same. I thought this is weird so I checked the resolution and it was in 720p and it was simply a matter of changing it back to 1440p and clicking apply.
I found it really weird that I had to put my nvidia card back in to tell me what resolution a game is actually running in.
@LtMatt I thought it might be helpful to share my experience and what I thought the issues were.
