The AMD Driver Thread

Have to agree, its like politicians and trying to get a direct yes or no answer, they always skip around the issue and never really answer it. Not matts fault obviously but if all we can get is vague "skip around the issue" responses then whats the point?

This is the very reason I'm getting off this AMD merry-go-round. These "Ready when it's ready" answers to anything just don't cut it. There is more to it, but after a decade on ATI/AMD I'm done. I'm done with waiting for crossfire profiles (hell I'm done waiting for single card profiles). I'm done with being crippled by gameworks, by Windows 10 drivers. When people have been calling the whole "gameworks/Nvidia" stuff, the fault of the game developers for crippling AMD cards they might have a point, but it doesn't matter whose fault it is. It's a dog eat dog world out there. It matters whose problem it is. It isn't a problem for Nvidia users, it isn't a problem for the game devs as the majority of gamers are using Nvidia these days. It's AMD's problem and mostly IT'S AMD USERS PROBLEM.

"We always aim to have the latest Crossfire optimisations for launching titles in our latest Catalyst driver". Sorry AMDMatt, nothing against you, but AMD's aiming is way off, they aren't even close to hitting the mark (GTA V drivers not withstanding). This is just a rant I had to get out of my system. I don't even care if the next top AMD card beats the 980ti in single use. I have no interest in spending any more money on crossfire cards. I hope it isn't so, but I can't see anyway back for AMD so the second those 980ti's drop on to the market I'm having two.

Sorry for the blog, just got buggered by the Windows 10 drivers....(after two reinstalls).....I needed to say it.

*No driver* Sigh.

Meanwhile at AMD...

This is news to me... what the **** is that about? So how often are we going to get a driver now? Every 6 months?

AMD once upon a time however unlikely and unbelievable you may find this had a bad reputation when it came to drivers.

They then decided to fix all this and invented the catalyst drivers with which they planned to up their driver support and release drivers on a monthly basis in order to combat the problem and image surrounding their brand.

in 2012 they decided to cease this program and only "release drivers as needed"
What it should have said is we will release drivers as little as we can get away with and will fix issues as they appear"

AMD have gone full circle

That article was from Sunday, June 03, 2012 so totally irrelevant to now. Or is it?

The drivers seem to be all over the place these days. Maybe they knew what was coming.

I'm going to guess from the complete silence from Matt that we aren't getting a driver today...

Seriously thinking of putting my cards on the MM and jumping ship.

I think it is relevant though as that seems to be happening again. Yeah, they knew damn well what was happening.

My gripes with the drivers atm:

  • Nearly 5 months with no Elite: Dangerous profile
  • No release day driver for Witcher 3
  • No profile for PCars release
  • No VSR dispite being promised it for Jan/Feb!
  • Too many missed deadlines and false promises!!!

Then the only answer (well not really) we as a community get from AMD is:

WHAT A JOKE!!!!

It isn't a problem for Nvidia users

Actually, it is a problem for Nvidia users too, at least those that have more than 1 year old cards.

As for them making clear statements, you guys are hounding them but don't stop to think for a minute (maybe out of ignorance) that if they do make a clear statement it can very easily backfire on them as the internet is quick to rage about every little thing. And how could they commit to a certain date anyway? Anyone that knows anything about software dev knows how easily things can go awry and then you have to start all over or take another x weeks to clean-up.

At the end of the day their software has improved dramatically and though things take a bit longer to come it's clear that they work and work well. Could they improve? Clearly. But let's not pretend that Nvidia somehow has everything worked out and their drivers are flawless or you will encounter no issues if you use their cards instead. That's blatantly untrue.

It was coming though, then got delayed for more testing I was told by him. Gameworks in pCARS and Witcher 3 are to blame for the delay..

They knew these games were coming, the driver should have been tested and ready to go last week for release at the beginning of this week. The week's testing time for catching issues should have been built into the release schedule. By leaving the release to the last minute, something unforseen happens, the release gets delayed for a bug, and then customers crucify them.

Look in this thread alone to see how many AMD customers have considered this a last straw and now want to switch to Nvidia. All because of the bad feelings and perception of poor customer service due to this driver being late for one of the biggest, most anticipated games of the year.

They stopped doing the monthly WHQLs, as people were having to wait about that long for their game supporting driver, and they also had to rush through them, so as not to miss the deadline for sending them off to get the signing, which probably meant them also having to leave stuff out, and by the time it got signed and back to them to be released, they were out of date.

Now, they can just take their time on them, which ups their quality (in theory, as no deadlines, so no having to rush), and release them as soon as they are finished, and not out of date either.

Still isn't helping them hit any deadlines. Seems more like an excuse to cut the driver team, they are now suffering greatly for it.

I think all the crossfire Amd owners that can't wait for drivers should just take up the good deal Nvidia have at the minute.

Buy one card for the price of two. :D
