** The AMD Navi Thread **

it could just as easily be "5000 series to commemorate their 50th year and 7 because its 7nm" and all of them are called RX5700 and we get a cut down one called something stupid like RX5700 lite
Or stick with 3, 5, 7 and 9 nomenclature:

RX 5730
RX 5750
RX 5770
RX 5790

My, those are familiar numbers...

So AMD pick a game that runs well on there hardware yet also runs well on Nvidia and you have a problem with this. Do you think Nvidia would have been so kind. If I was AMD it would have been Rage as wasn't the Vega range beating the 2080ti in that title at 1080p/1440p. I would say Strange Brigade was fair enough and no company would pick a game that favoured there rivals. The fact that tier for tier the difference ain't large on current cards shows it was not over the top.

Starbrigade performs about 8-10% faster on average on AMD kit.

So if it's true this card is bang on 2070 performance, no faster or slower for a rumoured $500.

What's the point of it existing at that price? 2070 is a bad card/performance level as it is.

worth remembering that the RX590 is just a slightly more refined and overclocked RX580, which is just a more refined and overclocked RX480. Can't really guess anything based on the names, they (and Nvidia) change the numbering schemes all the time, While it would be nice to think there may be a bigger chip it could just as easily be "5000 series to commemorate their 50th year and 7 because its 7nm" and all of them are called RX5700 and we get a cut down one called something stupid like RX5700 lite

RX 5007 would be best then, unless it's a 700nm GPU? :p How big would that be for an equivalent GPU of the Navi lol

I'm certainly more hopeful for Navi now that we are moving away from GCN.
Looking at TDP AMD quoted I wouldn't be surprised if GCN is still the underlying micro architecture. AMD themselves are positioning this off against a RTX 2070 which is 195 watt TDP card on a 12nm node but this top end Navi card is 180 watts TDP on 7nm node. If Navi had truly fixed GCN gaming woes I would have expected it to be giving better performance then a what a RTX 2070 gives or the same but for less power (bearing in mind they are on smaller node).

Don't forget that even before this AMD were behind in both efficiency and too end perf. So even with new node it doesn't mean they will be beating Nvidia. Lack of research funds etc compared to their competitor.

Thankfully it is looking to be a lot better and I will be looking at Navi seriously now.

The dumb part is they are trying to match Nvidia prices it seems. Screw that. Nvidia are gouging like crazy, we need some sanity back, we don't need AMD to gouge as well.

Surely it will be

Rx5500
Rx5600
Rx5700
Rx5800
Next year rx5900
Asrock showed 3 RX 5700 concepts. That's likely just cooler designs though as opposed to 3 different SKUs. But also don't forget that it's suggested RX 5700 comes in 180W and 225W SKUs, so straight away you need a subdivision of "5700".

Wrong.

RTX 2070 is 175 watt TDP card on a 12nm node.

The 5700 is also rumoured to be 220w that goes against the 2070.

This makes sense, AMD claims the Navi is 1.5x more efficient which is exactly what the 7nm process achieves, and is is exactly the same efficiency gains AMD reported for the Radeon 7.

So.if you take AMD's word for it, Navi is no more efficient than the Radeon 7 which needs 300w to compete with the 2080 , and moreover, the has been no architectural improvements since Radeon 7. So we are basically looking at a VEGA 64 at 220w.

Even if you take the 1.25 IPC gains, going from HBM2 to GDDR6 might have added 30w. So everything AMD achives with actual design changes rather than nice shrink is cancelled out by memory changes.

Which one is the maximum power at the wall under full load because that’s the only thing that matters

Agreed, of course if that is TBP (say225W) and people keep quoting TBP as the lower TDP others will assume the TBP is even higher than 225W. This makes Navi sound very power hungry, but no one would want to give that impression would they? ;)

And these cards are much faster than the card AMD compared.

Do we know if the 2070 they used was a reference design? This is the problem with not realised full benchmark specs you have no idea what’s going on in the back

Let’s wait for real reviews like anything

Seems like there are too many unknowns and assumptions about the chips. I am totally not surprised about the higher power draw than Nvidia, they simply haven't had the money for it. Seems like they are catching up on some areas, but really still have a lot to do in the future.

Polaris and Vega per usage have put me off, and I have often thought about Nvidia cards again, I am just not keen to support such blatant greed. (My opinion, not fact). I have a weaker psu and changing all that would add to the cost.

Always Seems like Nvidia are ready to roll out the next slightly better revision though, like they could have given that in the first place. They are sandbagging pure and simple, maximising profit. And as a company, who can blame them. As a consumer, I hate it. They need a kick up the butt to get moving.

What I am hoping is Navi will OC well enough and they aren't on the limit again.
