** The AMD Navi Thread **

If I hadn't bought a Radeon 7, yes i would be pretty excited to have upgraded from my vega 64 to something 7nm and cheaper. I think personally people are a bit fed up with AMD gpu's just being a let down, as I am also. But also now Nvidia stick their green eye into the 2060,2070,2080 "super" it kind of takes any thunder Navi had going for it.

Yeah you and me both, looks like i'll be keeping my 1070 for another year, we have got to the stage now where small incremental upgrades are the norm, the 2070 at £450 doesn't do it for me, £450 for a mid range card, its 30% faster than what i have, its just not worth it for that much money.

It is disappointing yes, if of course the 2070(super) is 40% faster for £350 then that may attract some. Of course too many ifs and buts.

I am interested though in how this ‘Super’ will shake up the market (if at all) and how Navi will compete (if at all).

Having to even add -if at all- is the depressing part of all of this, but I will still enjoy the tech hype train none the less as that's why we are here, but I know in the back of my mind that these might not be so good (if at all) :D

Already sold mine so Navi had better be good! Luckily it's summer and there's nothing coming out imminently I need a lot of GPU power for. I'll just keep saving and see what happens. If Radeon VII dropped to £500 I might bite.

Would you choose a R 7 over a 2080 ?

I know that wasn't specifically directed at me but just to chime in, yes I would. I cannot stand Nvidia as a company so prefer to give AMD my money.
That's refreshing to hear such an opinion and one I share, but it's not a normal mindset at all unfortunately

Imagine if everyone only ever bought the absolute best regardless of any other factors. We'd live in a world of very expensive monopolies. I do suspect Jensen's days are numbered so Nvidia may improve in time. However AMD must not forget why people like them as a company and not abuse their position if they get on top.

Nvidia will suck the life and moeny out of people until they are toppled as the kings, I was hoping intel would be the ones to bring them down to earth again as AMD can't ever seem to achieve it.
In my mind AMD should have focused on 1 killer card and then just the low to medium end, i.e rx 5xx series and then 1 monster, just to touch the minds of people who have the blanket of nvidia having the best always.
And then brought out the vega in between the two, and carried on forward from there, but the Fury never did this or the vega or the radeon 7 , so i gave up on this belief

Yes not sure what the best approach is. Does the halo product sell more mid/low end cards or is it about affordability?

I can see why they're going for the mass market, sell enough volume and you can make a lot more money. A three way fight is going to be very entertaining.

They are the gucci belt of gpus
And amd are treated as the lada/skoda of my childhood or tkmax
Infact is just like at school when you should have nike coz their the most expensive not Adidas or gola lol
And just like gpus they all run pretty much the same

Jen is going to be around for years to come I suspect, he's slowly but surely built up Nvidia to a point were it can almost challenge Intel for market dominance and I can't see him leaving or retiring at this critical point. Besides how do they get him out? The way the shares are owned it would be hard to vote him out. The Vince McMahon of semi conductor's.

Indeed.

Right now I am "split" on which GPU to buy for my new build. I have a hunch that at E3 next week AMD will announce a 2nd RDNA card. Maybe a cheaper slower one to compete against the 2060. Releasing something more powerful than a 2070 that competes more at 2080 levels doesn't make any sense to me unless they're about to axe the R7. Which I don't see happening until next year.

If this happens, then I bet they'll release a third card probably early next year and drop the R7.

For my new build, I want top performance. But I'm thinking of buying a Vega 56 as it's good VFM right now and then keep that until AMD release whatever RDNA card they come out with to take over the R7

Mmmm decisions decisions indeed.

True. Sad that they are releasing apparently what is a new architecture, which is 7nm and they cannot even release something that beats a 2080Ti. If rumours are true, then even on lower performance cards price for performance won’t be getting substantially better than what is available now. Just another fail imo. As for the Nvidia super stuff, just more milking and nothing at all to be excited about. All a bit sad.

I will probably just grab a RTX 3070 when it comes out and keep that for a very long time.

I would rather give my money to AMD also as they need it more, but they don’t make things easy. They will get my money for Zen 2 at least.

In relation to Navi, I would love to see Nvidia fans comments when the new Futuremark PCI4.0 benchmark comes out.
When Nvidia custom made benchmarks come out (Time Spy, Ray Tracing), they are up there showing their hubris. I do wonder when there is a new benchmark out, what they going to say :D
Or stay away from it and not run it?

A thought I had on the train. Mainly surrounding PCIE 4.0 - right now current cards do not saturate PCIE 3.0 so I have been scratching my head and trying to figure out the benefit of and reason for ensuring the new NAVi cards are on PCIE 4.0

The only thing I could think of (and I have absolutely zero idea if this is even possible, so don't shoot the messenger) - is that could they utilize the extra bandwidth for ray-tracing somehow?

I think it's for posturing more than anything.

The reason is why not be PCI-E 4.0? We have motherboards supporting it, time to move on.
Worst case it would work perfectly at 8x and we can plug an NVME card for M.2 raid on the second PCI-e 4.0 8x slot. :D

15GB/s drive here I come :D
