But wasn’t the 7900XT the actual replacement for the 6800XT? AMD just played the same game as nvidia and moved their cards up a tier and pricing respectively.

Yeah, but it ended up a big and expensive chip which couldn't properly keep the pace with the competition.
Since the margin for gaming was around 2% lately, AMD was kinda forced to push upwards the price if they wanted to make some money on it.
RX 6700 XT: $479.99
RX 6800: $579.99
RX 6800 XT: $649.99
RX 7800 XT: $499.99
The nearest release price comparison to the RX 7800 XT is actually the RX 6700 XT, i think it was intended to be a reduced price RX 6800 successor.

Interesting view. I just tried doing similar for 7>8 series and can't find quite the right comparison. Basically comes down to whether it's above or below GRE launch price at $549 I think?

Do we know what those 6000 series cards were selling for when the 7800XT was released?
Using the wayback machine, an entry on a competitors site on the 14'th October 2023, so 1 month after 7800 XT launch, i found a 6800 XT for £540, it was the cheapest, also found a 6950 XT on the same day for £570.
Again on the same day the 7800 XT was £515, the Sapphire Pulse. I think they may have been cheaper before 7800 XT launch.
It didn't capture on 7800 XT launch day, 6'th September 2023.
The thing is if you base your successor card pricing on the cheaper EOL card you end up at $0 eventually, let say the 6800 XT was $400 at the time so you launch the 7800 XT at $400, when that goes EOL its $300 so the 8800 XT is then $300..... you see how that doesn't work?
It all depends on the performance of the thing, if its between the 7900 XT and 7900 XTX, as rumoured, it needs to be... yeah, around $550 to be next gen, $500 would make it pretty good.

I was thinking if the 6800 XT was more expensive than the 7800 XT when that launched, how did they expect to clear stock of the older cards? Unless this was one of those AMD launches where they sent out 50 cards and everything after that was pre-orders and they were hoping people wouldn't want to wait.
Yes this is exactly what they did. The 7800 XT was 25% - 30% cheaper than the 6800 XT launch MSRP. So they did indeed improve the price/performance at the £450 mid tier level. It took AMD far to long to bring the 7900 XT to the original 6800 XT price point.

all AMD has to do is bring 4080 performance at around 500 notes, bring out Thier ai hardware based upscaling and sling 16gb on it. The masses will be happy.

Nice bit of revisionism. Most found the 7900 XT (and to a lesser extent the XTX) an appalling price on release. Even AMD fans said it was a good GPU priced very VERY poorly. AMD were called out for renaming their x800 tier and raising the prices. Yet both these GPUs reviewed very well.
The problem being called out with people not buying AMD is when AMD do actually review well, have good prices, better performance than Nvidia and yet still sell poorly in comparison to Nvidia. 6700 XT or 7800 XT for example. The 7800 XT was the 6700 XT replacement and was priced accordingly and as such was considerably better than the equivalent Nvidia GPU.
Now my take on this is Nvidia market share is more (not exclusively) down to OEMs than the tiny fraction of people like us at enthusiast level. The vast majority do not build or even upgrade their own PCs and don’t care about DLSS > FSR or Ray Tracing. They certainly aren’t going to zoom in to 400% and claim they aren’t pixel peeping. They just buy prebuilds or laptops to play games on. And they tend to have Nvidia products built in.
