I left the "Wait for Vega" queue a while back and watched the hype train and group hugs on r/Amd with no little amusement. Now that the cat's escaped from the bag, it looks like I'm going to be needing a very large bag of popcorn.

AMD's graphics division have made themselves look a right bunch of charlies with Vega.

Did you guys noticed that the person testing that Vega card used a very old (~6months) driver, not the new Vega driver?

Has no one else noticed he's NOT using the Frontier Edition driver?

FE Driver 17.20

Driver he's using is from January 17.1.1, a normal Crimson one

Looks like we can discount his results for now. Why would you do this. Even if reviewing a current card you would use the latest drivers. Using January drivers is criminal on a brand new card.

He said he switched the driver from.pro mode to gaming mode which can only be done with the Vega FE driver. I expect he has old AMD drivers installed and GPUZ is getting confused.

Of course he should probably try and clean out all old drivers

It certainly shows the guy is not competent (550 watt PSU?) if he can't even use the correct drivers. It puts doubt into everything he posts.

Something looks off. Is it GpuZ? He's got the pro suite installed.

A pity he's not running some monitoring software alongside the benchmarks.

Why is it the people that get their hands on these seemingly haven't a clue what they're doing?

Has a grand to splash out on a card, hasn't a clue about drivers and has a barely adequate psu.

Lots looking off. His last post is this. SO he's probably taking a step back and getting things sorted now. Especially after he stated he can't get stable Frequency either. So there's possible drivers issues, cramped MITX chassis, and that 550W PSU with an overclocked CPU in there as well.

Guys,
I need to figure out all of the settings and what to test as I think I am doing random things and I have card for couple of hours. Let me try to get my head around it and I will let you know as soon as possible.

the psu won't effect the graphics score, unless the gpu is pulling 400w as the cpu is barely used, if the psu did reach it's limits the card would simply crash/shutdown. not downclock by a small amount. that's thermal throttling.

mitx shouldn't matter as that's what blower cards are designed for, it's not a typical card dumping heat back into the case.

Just for comparison, i checked how much the gaming drivers count.

The 390X desktop card is more than 50% faster in Firestrike than the Firepro W9100. Same GPU, only ~10% clock difference, still by cooling and driver the desktop card is vastly better at gaming.

this was using the gaming drivers.

I wonder if he installed the card with the old drivers present, took the GpuZ screenshot and then installed the FE driver suite to run the bench?

Doesn't instil confidence though!

Nah, honestly I don't know what this chap is doing. For all we know he just installed the FE drivers over old crimson ones as well causing issues.

@Mtom mentioned that the 390X is over 50% faster in Firestrike than the W9100 card and they're both the same GPU; just different drivers.

I wish PcPer or someone got their hands on a Frontier Edition instead of this chap :(

That's the thing, we just don't know.

He seems to have disappeared though. The AMD snatch squad have got him in a darkened room at undisclosed location.....where's Liam Neeson when you need him :D
