I bought a gigabyte g1 for 450ish yesterday to hedge my bets on Vega. Will wait for proper reviews before making my mind up. Have a feeling 1080 prices will increase if Vega tanks

Exactly. I was really hoping AMD would take control with Vega.

It's nice to dream but AMD is the small party in both CPU and GPU and has considerably less resources. If all sides use their resources efficiently AMD flat out loses.

The CPU lark only works because Intel didn't take notice of AMD gluing chips together and got undercut hugely.

Can't do the same trick with GPUs because they are already using thousands of cores.

The only way you beat a better funded team is with disproportionate efforts and innovation or the bigger party showing lack of effort to improve.

Can I say this 500W figure was in 3d Mark stress test as far as I can see. Might as well measure power consumption in Furmark and use that right? Useless for gaming if it was taken in a stress test

I mean this is a valid statement. But I would say that AMD (Under Lisa) has been "giving it all" and Ryzen does show some true innovation to be honest. At least in the space.

Yes, using +50% power limit as well so an extreme case. More meaningful results are in Metro Redux where it hits 460W+ in Turbo and +50% power limit modes.

It's the GPU only, power limit +50%

Is anyone playing games eight ours a day at full utilization of a GPU? Seems like another extreme corner case to support a particular argument.

This is what I've been saying for a number of posts - the examples used are basically a reductio ad absurdum to push a preconceived and biased narrative that is ungenerous to and disconnected from a more regular/normal usage scenario.

Not that being aware of the existence and application of one's own biases is a common trait these days, to be fair.

If the reviews come in and are as rumoured (see. Actually correct) and OCuk sell out then I have lost all faith in humanity to make reasonable judgements in their lives:)

OCuk might only have 11 in stock, so unless they give confirmed sales figures, which will not happen. Selling out of Vega is a meaningless pointer to a successful launch.
