The Android rooting + flashing super guide

I've got an HTC Desire but I've never looked into any of this stuff, what are the reasons for this? What benefits will I get if I do this?
I apologies if I've just asked the most stupid/obvious question.
 
New shortcut > Application and use custom icon :p (in Launcher Pro anyway).
 
probably a silly question but i am just at the point of wiping the data off the phone and adding a custom rom,when i have been through this process and rebooted to the new rom will i have to input any settings to get the mobile internet working and messaging g settings ,this is for virgin media,thanks for the guide my man,so far so good..
 
Most (if not all) ROMs have a huge APN list included anyway so your network should be connected immediately without issue :)

If not then you can adjust the settings later in the APN settings ection.

Khaaan! are there stock roms about if you wanted to revert ? im still debating if to flog mine and get a HD...

ps i appreciate all your help, been having a productive day at work... flashed 3 roms so far :D
