This can also happen if you flash a ROM that uses A2SD+, and don't have an EXT partition on your SD card (voice of experience after I buggered up my EXT partition ).
I've got an HTC Desire but I've never looked into any of this stuff, what are the reasons for this? What benefits will I get if I do this?

sorry im being a pain here. i have downloaded and unzipped on my sd card (i can see them on the phone) but how the heck do i use them apply them to the desktop?
probably a silly question but i am just at the point of wiping the data off the phone and adding a custom rom,when i have been through this process and rebooted to the new rom will i have to input any settings to get the mobile internet working and messaging g settings ,this is for virgin media,thanks for the guide my man,so far so good..
