The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

ah heck :(

That's a kicker and a shame as they were doing reasonable well :(
I think I'll have to have a look at what they were releasing and see what I hadn't got yet.

I guess it's probably not a real surprise given what's happened in the US, but it's a real shame if true :( (I wonder if that fire at the storage facility had anything to do with the decision, as I'd imagine the loss of the stock even if insured affected their bottom line).

I would imagine that, even if insured, the fire would have hurt them quite a bit. It would have meant they would have had a lack of copies of new titles that they would have wanted to be promoting heavily at the time, (iirc Sora no Woto would have been a new release at that time).

I _think_ I have everything of theirs which I want (I picked up a couple of titles over the last couple of months which filled in some gaps).

Btw if you have an account on Fandompost you're going to need to re-register after the weekends hosting issues.

There hadn't been much noise from them since their boss left to work for kaze UK plus with several series that are licensed to bandai in the states going to manga instead of them (and the loss of stock) might've been the last nail in the coffin in their existence (if this is confirmed).

Cheers for the headsup on the fandompost, from what little i can make out, it sounds like their server went badly wrong, I thought it was running slow/there was something wrong the other day but thought it was just slow.
re-regged now :)

Re Beez, I'd forgotten that thir head guy had moved to Kaze, so possibly not so surprising given everything else, still sad to see them go :(
It means we're down to Manga, MVM and Kaze now from memory :(

I think it was more a case that they were overloading their hosting provider and basically had their hosting pulled :( .... Chris B had backups but he couldn't get them to import properly on the new provider (Dreamhost). He's reimporting articles etc but the forums are having to be done from scratch :(

edit:

It looks like Sentai has license rescued Someday's Dreamers. I've got the Geneon release for this and it's a delightful little series about a young girl learning to be a mage. It would be nice if they also get the second series, which I don't think was ever released in the US, as that is very good as well.

edit 2:

There's been a couple of posts on the Beez UK twitter account over the last couple of hours indicating that there will be some sort of announcement from them eventually but in the mean time their titles will be available in the UK at least.

If the information is true then it looks like we're down to two distributors since I don't think Kaze does distribution since the packaging for samurai girls has both manga and kaze logos on it (so I'm guessing manga are doing the distribution for kaze).

Well to try and derail this thread from the slightly glum news.

I've made no secret of the fact I really enjoy music in many forms previously, I was linked to this earlier, and thought some of you might enjoy it too:
Warning: Very Surreal :D

So looks like there will be no Bd boxset for K-ON! season 1 in the UK, just a DVD one. And Bandai are only slipping out a DVD set in the US before their stopping of new releases so no BD boxsets for the title.

I think that deserves some fowl language, if you'll excuse me for a moment.
Hen, duck, Turkey. Goose.

That feels better ;)

Seriously that's annoying to say the least, but it possibly explains why some of the sub licenses Madman and Manga have been doing have been kept waiting for materials, if Bandai haven't even been working on them at their end:(
It would be nice if Madman and Manga could source the HD materials and soundtracks themselves to author the discs (IIRC Madman have stated several times they often license directly from the Japanese who then supply the English tracks/translations from the US), but that seems unlikely for what is a fairly niche release, unlike GITS 2 where they knew the market for something that wasn't available in the US was in the UK/Auz (when they actually got the GITS:SAC cast to do the dub).

I guess there could still be a possibility of a BD boxset, eventually, in Australia as Madman did put out BD singles (hence they are part way there unlike Manga). But whether they could justify it after the singles release ...

Not only that the disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya blu-ray release has been canned as well (blamed on the cost that would be incurred fixing madmans bungled master) I just hope the welcome to the space show BD release doesn't go the same way.

Manga have posted a response on their Twitter feed giving details on the issues with the K-ON! boxset release and, as demonix posted, the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya BD release.

Re cancelled #HaruhiMovie and #KOn blu-rays.

On behalf of Manga I wanted to apologize to all of those UK based customers who have been left bitterly disappointed by our decision not to release these titles on Blu-ray after publicly suggesting on this forum that we were planning on doing so. Please allow me to explain our decision.

I will start with K-On first. My original plan was to release K-On as a complete season set on double disc DVD and Blu-ray at the same time. However, we were reliant on Bandai US supplying us their English dub and when they announced they would release K-On! as 4 individual DVD and BD volumes in America we had to agree to follow suit if we wanted to release K-On! around the same time as them. I made the decision to delay our 2-disc BD release until Spring 2012 rather than copy Bandai and produce 4 very expensive single disc BD releases. Once we got to the end of 2011 we learnt that the cost of access to the dubs plus the high cost of accessing the HD master, authoring and mastering of the discs and manufacturing was prohibitively expensive. In addition, we also realised that we would not be able to break even on the production of the Blu-ray.

With regards to the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya we were meant to release a Blu-ray in November and found out that the BD disc replication master we were sharing with Madman and which was supplied by Bandai USA did not work on Region B Playstation 3, so we had to scrap it and start again. Once again, we had to pay high access fees for the dub, and would have to pay a very steep access fees for the HD-master (we cloned Madman's PAL DVD replication master for our DVD) and that combined with new authoring and mastering fees left us with another release that was going to lose Manga money. If Manga keeps losing money we go out of business and everyone loses!

I spend all of my time am the Manga office fighting tough and nail for you guys, the British anime fans, to ensure that we pick up the best new series and movies and get them out here as soon as possible. I listen to your comments; every last one of them, every day here on Twitter and Facebook and I answer most of them too. No-one should doubt how much I and my colleagues here at MangaUK care about you, the customer. We do not take decisions like this lightly. I personally, fought to maintain these Blu-ray releases against stiff opposition from my superiors, but the commercial considerations of running a successful company overruled my objections about the damage to our brand's credibility should we not release these titles.

In summary, I would say that while we have made a sensible commercial decision, we have created a situation that is alienating to a good deal many of you and I sincerely hope that over time we can make it up to you.

So, there you have it. Straight from the horse's mouth. I cannot apologize enough to the customers we have disappointed with this decision. I hope that with time you can appreciate us for what we tend to get right, more than what we tend to get wrong. I am personally looking forward to 2012 and you have my assurance that any new BD releases announced for this year will be released. We already have Samurai Girls, Bleach Movies 1,2 and 3, Mardock Scramble and Roujin Z confirm by @KazeUK plus a whole heap more to confirm later in the year. We have learnt a lot from 2011, particularly when it comes to Blu-ray and I am confident we will start making better decisions that benefit both the business and you, our valued customers going forward.

Yours sincerely,

Personally, having the US BD's of the former and the HK and US BD's of the latter, this doesn't really affect me that much, (although it would be nice if someone like Sentai picked up the second K-ON! season and movie following the changes at Bandai US which could then give Manga a chance of getting them for a UK release in the future).

So they messed up the mastering of the blu-ray, why on earth does that mean they needed to pay for all the rights again? :/

He doesn't mean that; he's reiterating the point that (assuming you mean Haruhi) they had to pay a lot for access to the dub and the HD master originally and additionally now would have to pay authoring and mastering fees that they were not expecting to have to pay before.

The original costs plus the new costs made it uneconomic to do the release.

I.e. "once again" in the I repeating myself sense rather than we have to pay a second time ... at least that's how I'm reading it.

Just watched the first episode of Rinne no Lagrange.

It does look very nice with the visuals. It does seem however that every show nowdays has a need to include fan service for the sake of it, by the time you're half way through the episode you've already seen the main character in a swimsuit, stripped to her underwear by her older sister and inspected and naked in a shower scene.

When i see stuff like this i don't know whether i just don't care or whether it's a bit dissapointing as in many ways it's scraping the bottom of the 'sex sells' to otakus barrel which treads a dangerous line between what sells and actual quality. Not a rant, just an observation.

Theres a strange alien girl who is a cross between Eureka from E7 and Rei Ayanami from Evangelion. There are giant robots. There are bad guys with more giant robots. The base of operations is a floating island. The protagonist is a bit clueless.

Overall i'm optimistic about this. I recon it will come somewhere above Guilty Crown and Infinite Stratos in quality but below the likes of Code Geass.

Haruhi news

Whilst I realise they have commercial responsibilities, Manga are REALLY digging themselves an early grave with some of these actions of late, no UK release of Haruhi on BD is a real dissapointment, and is a pretty high profile release to **** up, especially given the almost mascot like status of the series.

I'm glad I decided to just grab it as an Xmas present from the US, as it'd have been even more time wasted if I didn't. The only reason I hadn't ordered earlier was because it was meant to be coming to the US.

And this is the same manga that teased me for importing Spice and Wolf, a series they haven't even announced... leaves me kinda speechless in a way (and not a good one).
