The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

Definitely I am finding it entertaining myself too but it's also fun spotting all the Initial D easter eggs/references.

I've never watched Initial D, I think I see the references you mention but some will pass me by, though I don't find understanding them necessary to enjoying MF Ghost.

There was a scene showing a drifting car that was presumably from Initial D, and I think references to the teacher (Fujiwara) are likely related to Initial D as well?

Correct, all the mentioned characters from Initial D so far shown in MF Ghost: Takumi Fujiwara, Ken Kogashiwa, Ryo(Ryosuke) Takehashi and Fumihiro.
The drift from the panda AE86 is also a reference to Initial D as well.

Shangri-la frontier any good?

I like it a lot but you need to enjoy gaming, fantasy genres. I like that the author appears to have played actual games unlike say SAO.

One of the best picks this season imo for sure (which I neglected to add to my list I just posted here yesterday! I'll add it now).

I dropped Shield Hero last season.

Goblin Slayer started this season pretty ropey, but at least they actually seem to have gotten back to killing goblins again, hopefully they don't follow the kids around anymore.

Was thinking the same thing too. Although i read S3 of shield hero meant to pick up and be much better. Not sure lol

I heard s3 was better as well but I still don't think it's going to be amazing, so will probably give it a skip.

I started Helck, that's pretty cool so far, and has an interesting mystery thing going on with a global scope adventure, reminds me a little of Hunter x Hunter (not that it closely resembles it).

Started watching Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix last night and wow, for a Netflix anime it looks great and the combat is nice and fluid so far, looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Wow just watched the trailer your right, looks pretty slick. Defo check it out.

Is it actually an anime though?

Purists would argue that anime has to be, at least primarily, animated in Japan (I am aware that studios outsource a lot).

Netflix seem to take the term anime and apply it to anything which is like anime, even if it technically is not.

Edge runners was an anime, because Stuido Trigger made it, but Castlevania is not, for example.

I managed to pretty much binge watch it in a couple of evenings. I thoroughly enjoyed it and its left open for a second season.

Anyone using Crunchyroll? Just wondered what your thoughts on it were - I know it’s worth using a US VPN for access to the larger catalogue but hows the experience in terms of buffering/lag/quality of the stream?

I had a 75 day trial for it, using it on my Nvidia Shield TV so it's an Android TV box. Not using a VPN.

Pros:
  • Easy to see new stuff airing with minimal effort to try stuff out.
  • No need to hoist the sail or raise the flag for most things.
  • Relatively cheap cost especially compared to Netflix.
Cons:
  • Quality was very hit and miss, no way of telling what quality it was currently streaming at. It looked like it would sometimes drop the quality but no option to show the current one or force 1080p in the settings.
  • A little buffering at times, not loads, but I'm on 900/120 internet and it's hard-wired in, so should never struggle. Also no VPN to slow it down.
  • When you start watching something seems to be no way to remove it from your list of shows, so it remains in watch next episode state even if you disliked the show/dropped it.
  • Censored episodes. I tried out Terror Formars, and the censorship on episode 1 was awful. It's a very violet show, and they had like fullscreen black/white fill for censoring it. Madness. I did find an option to enable mature content, but for this show it still showed me the censored episodes. No way to tell if you're watching a censored epsiode or not as it doesn't say anywhere.
  • No skip intro option on the client I had. the web/desktop version has skip intro options. No chapters at all seem to exist for skipping ahead or bookmarks for the ed or anything.
  • Crunchyroll is basically Sony and supporting them does not necessarily support the hard work of the anime studios who make the good quality content.
As you can see, Cons seems to be winning, so I won't be carrying on my subscription.

Damn, I've missed out on the early pre-order discount for part 2 of Gundam build fighters and G Gundam from alltheanime.
I might wait for the normal versions to drop at around 30-40 quid instead, I'm not too fussed with having the little art booklet thing.
