The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

Finished watching Ben-to earlier on. Amusing series about people fighting over discounted bentos with the survivors getting to pick what they want.

Plenty of fighting action and some good characters. Series didn't really have much in the way of growth but it wasn't the sort of series where you worry about things like that.

edit:
Also finished the final volume of the Twin Spica manga today. Interesting series following a little girl attending a high school course to train astronauts in a future Japan still recovering from the crash of a rocket on lift off which caused a large loss of life. Vertical released the story over 12 volumes and it is nice seeing how the characters grow and change as the go through the difficult course and over come the hurdles involved.

Just to note that Vertical have announced that they are letting the Twin Spica manga go out of print due to poor sales. Personally I really liked this nice story. Yes it doesn't have lots of action or fanservice but it is a good story which is consistent and believable. I would recommend getting the 12 volumes if you like that sort of thing, while you still have the chance.

Started the Negima Shaft version last night. 2 episodes in and I'm not sure how I compare it to the first yet. It seems a little less whimsicle and fun at this point, and I'm not convinced on all of the art style/use at times, but I'll give it time and see how it goes :)
I might have a bad memory or be being overtly harsh, but the japanese voice cast seems a little more...generic sounding than I remember the initial version too, but that could just be my memory.

Small headsup again.
DirectTVs (part of the LaptopsDirect etc group) are currently doing the Toshiba BDX3200KB for £60 inc delivery, or 65 inc delivery for Monday. And guess what...you can make it multi-region for BD and DVD :D

Whilst it's a *little* more expensive than the previous 1200KB I mentioned near Christmas, it's got a better feature set, is 3D compatible I believe unlike the 1200KB, and also doesn't seem to have some of the firmware bugs which Toshiba haven't fixed yet on the 1200KB.

Don't get me wrong, the previous player is still a bloody good buy, but this deal trumps it for the few quid more :)

Thought I'd mention it, as I'm sure I'm not the only one who's interested in multiregion BD players :)

Watched a couple of things today ...

Finished watching parts 3 and 4 of Tales of the Abyss on Bandai's DVD release, (incidentally ... wow a 4 part Bandai release where all the disks played back without issues!). Fairly reasonable fantasy which did try and over complicate itself at times but was generally ok. Most of the characters were reasonable, but not outstanding. It was pretty average really.

Dantalian no Shoka ... interesting series about a man and his mystical library. The characters here were ok but the stories ... the episodes were fairly standalone with a few recurring characters (other than the main pair) and some were good, but others were very weak. It seem to me to be one of those series which could have been a lot better, the overall concept was good, but the execution just lacked energy and drive and so it didn't live up to it's promise. It was almost as if there were good stories there trying to get out ...

Agreed on Dantalian Andi, I kinda felt dissapointed, given it was based off a novel series I'd expected episodic content with an underlying main driving plot, but you didn't really get that, and the showlacked development for it.
I also found because of this, it took me far longer to get through it than a series where I could get into the plot and get drawn along.

Watched a couple of other things at the weekend too ....

Sands of Destruction ... on Funimations SAVE release. Generally forgettable fantasy stuff, I wasn't expecting much and I wasn't disappointed. It was ok in places but a lot of it was fairly snooze worthy.

Also ran through a couple of the short episode series which have been airing this season; Recorder to Randoseru and Popopyo Kansatsu Nikki. Both of these are around 3mins per episode which, to be honest, I find annoying as as soon as you start to get into an episode then it's over.

The former series is ok but is a bit of a one trick pony, (it's about a brother and sister where the elementary school younger brother looks like he's in University ... hence every time he tries to walk home with his classmates he tends to get arrested as people thing he's a pervert trying to kidnap them), whist the latter does have slightly more varied stories (centering around a spherical cat).

Spent the evening watching a Japanese live action comedy/drama film (Stranger be mine) at one of the local cinemas (which was pretty good) :)

Well for anyone who read the above and might be considering the Tosh BDX3200, here's my feedback, mine having arrived today:

shameless copy'n'paste from my post at animeuknews said:
Well the great news is mine arrived today and I've been able to run it through some paces to see how it compares to the previous BDX1200.
It is UNDOUBTEDLY a better player for us anime fans:

Pros:
-Bitstream now appears flawless, none of the dropouts/pops/stutters of the BX1200 (which I suggested switching to PCM to escape on the BDX1200 in a previous post)
-Just as easy to change region as the BDX1200
-The media centre (playback) now...well works, so you can watch H264 MKVs
-Supports Multiple Audio/Subtitles/Chapters/DD inside an MKV and switching during playback
-Reads NTFS formatted USB sticks, not just FAT32

Con:
-Initialises HD Audio (THD/DTSMA) a little slower than BDX1200, only really an issue for adverts etc
-Support for MKV subtitles basic, no styling/karaoke etc.
-No FLAC support

The BDX1200 is terrible/unworkable as a media player, despite the claims, I could never get it to play MKVs properly (it'd just got to a black screen).
I was worried the BDX3200 would be just as bad, but actually, bar FLAC support, for general playback it doesnt seem that far off my old WD LIVE. Certainly acceptable as a bonus feature, and excellent for a BD Player that cost all of £60, its a better media file player than my family's LG (which doesn't support MKV subtitles at all)

Less bugs, almost the same price, more features (working Media Playback and 3D output). Winner, no contest for best value :)

Watched the first 2 eps of Yamadas first time :(
Don`t think I will like this,it looked funnier on the trailers I saw, finding it ...just silly and very juvenile so far .Watched dog days on the weekend. Now that I really enjoyed :)

Is Guilty Crown any good? Trying to decide whether to get it, but I've only found mixed reviews so far :(

I haven't seen it all yet but apparently it starts off well but goes down hill as it goes along (in the discussions on it I've read). Personally I'll probably still watch it through eventually.

It is silly and juvenile ... is quite amusing at times. Btw you might want to take a look at Highschool DxD which just finished airing. It's the past seasons oppai anime but doesn't suffer, on broadcast, with the censorship these sort of series normally do, and I thought it actually had a pretty good plot.

Currently working my way through Un-Go at the moment.

Watched the Gantz live action movie the other day, was kinda impressed how close to the anime it was to begin with (especially how much the actors looked like the 3 main characters, that was freaky!), but they cut out so much stuff that it lost a lot of the emotional depth of the series. Overall it felt like the prologue to a different movie. Has anyone seen the 2nd movie? Is it more of the same or does it get better?

How bizarre! :D That's a must-try for me!

It ended up being a better series than I expected if I'm honest! Worth a watch anyway.

Watched the final Another last night, over a good series and I am glad I couldn't work out the story, nice change of pace from my usual type I watch.

I finished AnoNatsu first thing this morning, (I don't normally watch anime before work but after last weeks episode I wanted to know how it finished and was up early enough to have time to do so).

I'm not going to post spoilers but I thought it was a reasonable ending; it could have been better (personally I'd preferred more of the speculated link) but it was a good, if not unexpected, in some ways, ending.

Overall it was one of my favourite series this season with a good selection of characters, a nice interesting plot and a good mixture of genres involved.

Just finished this :)
But Please Teacher/Twins rip off or what?
Nearly ever character looked the same as Please,similar..ish storyline ending was similar too
Must say that despite this ,IMHO,copy of Please, I enjoyed this AnoNatsu

That'll be because the director and original character designer both worked on the Please series' ... the speculation whilst it was airing was that this series was tied in some way back to the original series (maybe characters being related on the main female characters side) and the place being llooked for being extremely similar to the setting for the original series'.

Well I liked it :) but from early in the first episode it was screaming Please Teacher to me.I would have thought the copy-rite owner of Please would have been up in arms over this

Hey all. Been awhile since i posted in anime threads here.

Been really into soap drama slice of life kinda stuff lately myself.

Just wondering about if anyone had any ideas about what i can search for regarding romantic comedy series which are long running to look for. As i really liked Maison Ikkoku which while I did not really find the animation to be great when I started watching it i came to appreciate the art style used and the story which was just great even tho some times it did drag a little here and there but on the whole i loved it all. Atm im watching Marmalade Boy which is similar in art style and story development and is a long runner also. But im wondering if anyone has any ideas on other romantic comedy dramas slice of life type animes they can recommend for me that are long running and are probably regarded as classics. I am thinking maybe of Ramma 1/2 but thats a bit different to maison but i might be able to get into it if its got a good story development tho trouble was last time i attempted to watch it i didnt like the anime style and the age of it but after enjoying maison i think i might have got myself to a point i could watch it.

On thing about Maison tho, i really hated it when they switch the voice actors around. The old women VA was decent at the start then brought in someone else which did a poor imitation of her which i felt really let that character down. I think the weird bloke (forgot the names lol) also had a VA switch but i think he came back near the end or at least it sounded like him again after awhile. I think Goku (sp) had a VA change but wasnt as bad and i quite like the VA as he does other animes i quite like. Really glad the Manager didnt get a VA change as loved her voice and would have been a show stopper if she had changed.

Urusei Yatsura is one anime series which even tho its a bit sci fi it is made by the same creator as Maison Ikkoku so should be good. Had a peek at utube and its dubbed and ANN says its dubbed so im thinkin its all dubbed but for the life of me i cannot find anywhere that has it.

Anyhow thats the request of what im hoping to watch later.

Btw anyone know any eng dub series coming out soon that might be worth keeping an eye out for. As i never know the release schedules for anime for eng dub as its hard to find out that stuff. I thought strike witches 2 was coming out but cant find it anywhere.
