The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

new poster alert!!

Im not new to anime, been watching it for years.

I have got Ghost in the shell, dragon ball/z/gt, gundam wing, rin daughters of mnemosyne, love hina...an a few others.

spos what im asking is what are some good animes to get that are either in english or are dubbed? as I cant speak japanese they need to be dubbed or in english.

Like Andi says, we really need to know if you're ok with Subs or it has to be dubbed :)

Interesting ... UP have a couple of things in there things coming in / new release RSS feed which I would not expect to see there .... some R4 Australian releases including parts 1 & 2 of Dennou Coil and the recent set of Usagi Drop.

I didn't spot that until you mentioned it (I don't really keep an eye on my RSS feeds even though the UP new release feed is the only one there).

It might be that they're expanding into importing from Australia since there's series that are available over there that aren't available in the states or have gone out of print (this'll be one thing I'll be keeping my eye on now since there's one item in their Australian list that I want to get my hands on).

If UP1 are doing Aussie stuff now, I may make more use out of them :)

As demonix says, Australia is starting to get some titles that the US either isn't, or has lost the licences to (Cardcaptor and Patlabor etc).

They are also listing When They Cry Season 1 and Season 2 Part 1 now along with a couple of seasons of Galaxy Angel, Honey and Clover complete set, Please Teacher, Please Twins and Nana complete set ... so it's looking good for them doing more Aussie releases.

I was thinking of importing Cardcaptor via EzyDVD but if UP are doing it I'll just grab it from there for convenience.

edit: would be nice if they got around to putting up the Yen Press September releases so I could pre-order Yotsuba& 11 while I remember I need to order it ...

I hadn't noticed that, still it's good news if they're expanding to pick up more shows you can't get in the UK/US as long as pricing isn't extreme :)

Currently virtually dropped Negima?! and making my way through Ghost Hunt, it's not a bad series, but it is very slow. Currently up to episode 10, so have a fair way to go as yet :)

The pricing looked pretty reasonable from what I saw ... normal sort of prices really. Their price for Usagi Drop, for instance, works out at less than my pre-order for it was (including shipping).

Finished watching Guilty Crown this evening ... well ... the series is set in a future Japan after a catastrophic event which has caused a virus which turns you into crystal before destroying you. It also has "voids" which are device/object which can be extracted from inside you by people with certain powers, terrorists, high school kids, dodgy military types and nutters. Style wise it had Production IG all over it reminding very strongly, at times, of GitS SAC ... but without the decent story line.

I don't think it is a bad series as such ... could it be better? ... yes. It starts off well but then gets confused as if they knew the beginning of the story and how they wanted to end ... but not really how to get there. The parts of the middle would have been reasonable on their own but combined all together it was just really messy with too much time spent on needless complications.

I wanted to like the series, and parts of I did a lot, but overall I found it frustrating to watch because of what it could have been rather than what it was ...

Watched Shakugan no Shana Final (season 3), i'm not sure what to make of it really and still in two minds on whether if i actually enjoyed it or not. The whole thing about Yuki not telling Shana what his what the plan was, was incredibly dumb and made for very unnecessary drama that was frustrating

Sums it up for me really. The same goes for Last Exile: Fam. If i have a number one pet hate about fictional stories it would have to be when wasted opportunities are allowed to happen when they could have been avoided and the product could have been so much more.

Rewatched Sekirei season 1 today, this time on Funi's BD release. Lots of fanservice and general harem humour with the odd bit of fighting (normally causing fanservice). Note for the curious that Funi have still molested the video in the last episode like on the original DVD release.

One amusing thing is that the trailers on the last disk claim to have a trailer in the listing for Strike Witches ... but if you watch it it is for Strike Witches Season 2 "out now on DVD/BD combo" ... so authored before the delay or someone slipped up then? :)

Nisemonogatari (with my brother whilst he was back from Uni) 7/10

Not a bad show, and Kanbaru steals the show every time she appears, but fundamentally, I felt just wasn't as good as Bakemonogatari; the fact that a single plot arc which actually didnt feel that indepth got stretched over more than half the series didn't really help here.

That said visually its still an interesting if very 'Shaft' show, and if you enjoyed the first show it's nice to see a continuation and more of the characters, many of whom seem to have decided long hair is no longer in vogue (for shame!!).

It also seems quite unsure as to whether it actually ended on episode 11 or not! Certainly I felt the TV ending of Bakemonogatari was far stronger, even if that is influenced by me being a sap for romance subplots getting some closure etc.

As a show it also seemed to rely on mild fanservice a little bit too much, for no particular reason.

Kizumonogatari, given the subject matter, will hopefully be a little more fulfilling, as the relationship between Shinobu and Koyomi and its formation, and how Hanekawa ran into Koyomi are probably going to be of more interest to fans of the series and characters than the sisters whom are not really THAT interesting.

It got a bit too weird with Araragi's sisters. I mean in Bakemonogatari, Nadeko had to take her clothes off to show the snake curse, fine. But in Nisemonogatari, Araragi is randomly molesting his sisters and stripping them naked while they protest. What the ****? If it happened once or twice I could forgive it, like with Araragi joking around with Hachikuji, but all the time? Seriously? That made for uncomfortable viewing.

Thats one of the things that put me off of Bakemonogatari/Nisemonogatari tbh, the reliance on fanservice. Family friendly it is not :p

I think so many shows nowadays put fan service first and substance/story second because the animation studios know they can exploit it for sales.

Personally I found that bakemonogatari pretty dull but one of the main complaints I have heard about the nisemonogatari series was it's level of fan service over plot so I'll have to agree there.

Oh and Aniplex have announce they will be releasing the former title in the US (detail to be announced at a later date).

There are also going to be DVD re-releases for Garden of Sinners and OreImo

Bakemono is actually getting a western release? :o Wonder how the hell that'll work with all the text clips etc.

As you could tell from my feedback, I much prefered Bakemonogatari to Nisemonogatari (although my brother really enjoyed Nise, more than I did), hoping Kizumonogatari will balance things a bit as frankly, who doesn't enjoy non-Twilight-esque vampires?

I did find the amount of fanservice/non-relevant stuff a shame TBH.
I think the problem was that they tried to fit *too little* into Nisemonogatari, the number of arcs and the content in them worked over 3/4 episodes in Bakemonogatari in the most part; unfortunately they stretched the arcs up to 7 episodes in Nise, which was too much, ideally they should have put another story from the next book in as well, but having not read the books, I can only guess this might perhaps be because the next chronological story arc perhaps ties in too much with the next one?

Ultimately from my point of view, the show was still enjoyable from the likes of some of the humour (Kanbaru's outrageousness always steals the show, even in Bake), but it should have featured more content rather than drawn out scenes and wordplay.

Yep, announced at one of the US conventions yesterday; I'm hoping that it gets a BD release as I think that the limitations of subtitles within the DVD format mean that it wouldn't work well with this title.

Same, that or providing a big book of translations etc is the only way I could think of you really doing it properly (without having to get a ton of frames reanimated).

On other subjects, after the quite slow going Ghost Hunt yesterday I repicked up Ergo Proxy. Seem to be getting into the styling a bit more this time round.

Also started watching Welcome to the NHK with my brother...quite an amusing series we probably all feel some slight affinity with to some extent...a few genuine laugh moments too, like one bit where my brother jokingly said, right so where are the tissues... and lo and behold that's just what the main character reached for in the next frame. Neither of us had actually expected the show to draw him doing just that :D
