**The ASrock 939dual-SATA2 (ULi M1695) thread**

OOPS! that was smelly?

Sounds like it may be a borked bios.

Can't hurt to reflash it.

I was just about to ask ns400r if I can FLASH without being able to POST
However, I thought I'd just try a couple more times whereapon a smelly smoke appeared and a couple of tracks have burnt out :(
I can't RMA 'caus I've done the volt mod and it's pretty obvious so I'll just have to bite the bullet and pay for a replacement when I get back from holiday next week

Thanks for the reply anyway!

  Well at least you now know what is broken !

{snip}Could i try it on SATAII then if it does not work revert back to IDE without losing my install?
If you can afford to do a reinstall of Windows then, yes go for it :)

Got this mobo recently & I set SATAII to SATA mode & whacked on the drivers on a floppy (i.e. 'copy directory "X32" and "X64" and file "JMicron", "txtsetup.oem" to floppy disk') before installing Windows.

Windows installed fine but did not run fine  Besides that, Acronis Disk Director Suite also did not run fine & to make it even more interesting found out that my WD SATAII HD doesn’t have/do NCQ  So for what it was worth, I reinstalled Windows in IDE mode. Been running fine so far :) Now only thing I'm wondering is if I'm getting 3.0GB/s running in IDE mode?

But great board nevertheless ;)

hi i got this board with a athlon 4000+ san diego(kab1e)...............thing is i want to overclock this to 2.8ghz.....but im rubbish at overclocking, has any got the same chip clocked that could give us the bios settings to change and what to change them to!.........any help would be appreciated!!!.cheers!..........btw im using cheap ram

Is the multiplier for the 4000+ 12x?
If it is set it to these settings for 2.8ghz. Try increasing the voltage if it doesn't boot or lower the cpu freq.

CPU CONFIGURATION
Overclock Mode - CPU,PCIE Async
CPU Freq - 233
Cool n' Quiet - Disabled
Memory Clock - 166

CHIPSET CONFIGURATION
CPU - NB Link Speed - 800

No, but you wouldn't get 3GB/s in any mode. 3Gb/s, yes. 3GB/s, no. Besides, it's only the theoretical maximum transfer rate to/from the HDD cache. Transfer to/from the HDD will be the same in either mode if NCQ isn't used. You won't lose much performance running in IDE mode.

typo :o

Anyway, after posting here, a problem has occurred  System seems to hang if left idle & monitor goes into standby, i.e. locks-up  :(

incorect my performance was halfed in IDE mode

How?

There is no way that faster transfer from the tiny cache on the HDD and NCQ will double HDD performance.

Unless you are running 4 or more HDD in a RAID, I don't see how performance could be halved. Two would result in a drop, but not in half.

I can see burst mode performance cut in half, as the theoretical max on IDE is 133MB/s and the theoretical max on SATA2 is 300MB/s, but that's only transfer from the HDD cache.

i dont know how but when i run it in IDE mode i get half the performance i do when running the drive in SATA mode

Ok, this is getting irritating  Following this, system is still locking-up when idle/downloading/uploading (monitor in & not in Stand-by). Set SATAII to 'Strong' & thought that had solved the problem, NOT

Setup:
  • A64 3000+ Winnie
  • 1GB (2x512MB) OcUK Value RAM @ 2.5-3-3-8 & 1T
  • HIS X700 AGP
  • Creative SB Audigy
  • 80GB WD SATAII & 160GB Maxtor SATA
  • 330W Tagan
Please help :(

EDIT: Using 2.20 BIOS

Some people have problems with this board running the ram at 1T. Try changing it to 2T.

Hiya all, first post - woo - nice to meet you fokls.

I am thinking about getting this board, and got wondering about this 1T 2T thing. Is this something different to the CAS latency? I couldn't find any memory which runs at 1T as standard! Is it some feature of the board? I'm thinking about buying one of the following memory bundles with the board:

Kingston 2GB Kit 400mhz DDR PC3200 Dimm (KVR400X64C3AK2/2G)
******** 2048mb DDR PC3200 400MHz 184pin Extra Value Ram 2 x 1024 KIT
Crucial's CT2KIT12864Z40B (again 2 x 1gig)

I think the kingston is a good buy at just £10 more than the ******* value ram, however crucial is a lot more expensive at around £30 more! Has anyone had any success with these memories at "1T", or can recommend any other non-really-expensive stuff?

And also, if anyone feels like showing off, a simple explaination of the 1T 2T thing would be cool - I've read most of this thread (most - it's pretty damn long!) and am still slightly clueless.

Thanks everybody - see you around :)

The Mushkin memory works very well with this board, there's also an interesting article on latency here: http://techreport.com/etc/2005q4/mem-latency/index.x?pg=1

That was a very interesting article, thanks very much for finding that for me. I now understand the command rate :D

The only reason I was concerned about the command rate timings was due to a "custom PC" article I read on this mobo. it said that the performance in 2T was significantly worse than in 1T, and at 2T, the board did not perform as well as the Nforce 4 chipsets. With 1T enabled, it did however.

Link: http://www.custompc.co.uk/custompc/reviews/80773/asrock-939dualsata2.html

But anyway, i'd be interested to here your thoughts on the matter! I'm off to check out Mushkin memory prices!

Have you had a look at OcUK's range & prices of memory (here)?

On 1T & 2T, entier Socket 939 range suffers (heavily  ) if run at 2T. See 'Q. Should I buy 2x1Gb or 4x512Mb?' here

I wonder why Asrock haven't released a AM2 board that supports dual graphics! or is it not possible to have a DDR2 system with AGP?
The ASrock 939dual-SATA2 (ULi M1695) does! With the AM2CPU Board :p
