The Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q – a 27” 1400p 144Hz Monitor with G-SYNC

Thanks pgi947 that would be great if you could :)

Another game I play a lot is trackmania 2 online and can get roughly 130fps in this title. Would I leave v-sync off, in the in game options and just let g-sync do its thing?

Cheers

Yes, you need to disable vsync in all games for gsync to work it's magic.

What gpu(s) are you going to be running on this monitor?

I'm running a gtx 970 which I am hoping will be enough :)

Tried crossfire and didn't get the same experience as I do with just one card

Ah good, should get a fine gaming experience from it then :)

If you don't have it installed already install GeForce experience and use the optimization function, should Gove you some indication as to the best settings to use for your card at 1440p :)

Thanks pgi947

I have geforce experience installed but it was maxing every game I have at 1920x1200. This caused the games to stutter at below 60fps as I liked to have v-sync enabled so I do not get tearing. Hopefully with the g-sync it should solve this :D

Actually you don't *need* to disable vsync ingame. When gsync is activated in the nv control panel it overrides everything at driver level. At least it does in all the games I've tested so far :)

Ah I was just going by the FAQ, can't remember if it was nvidias or Asus, one of them said to disable it :p

Tried assassins creed 4, mixed results as the games own frame limiter gets in the way even at forced 144hz as it still craps out at 60fps. I had some odd stutter on frame drops, but I had physx enabled. I checked gfe after and it says to disable physx, so it must still be broken. Will try again later with it disabled and see how it feels.

Thanks for that mate :)

Yes physx causes all sorts of problems in AC4. I found having it on low works reasonably well and doesn't cause the framerate to drop too much

What's a single 780 GTX like with this screen? I currently run a single 22'' 1080 LG screen (which is pretty old now). Can I still expect decent FPS in BF4, Titanfall etc?

Could not decide between the Asus Swift and the Acer KB280HK. Was going to go for the Acer until I watched the reviews of the individual monitors done by LinusTechTips.

Decided on the Swift and chucked in a couple of basic 980s that I plan to put under water when the blocks surface.

Ok bud, will do. Spent about 2 days calibrating and testing this monitor. I should point out I've not used a monitor calibration tool (yet, I don't have one but may pick one up). I've been using my Dell IPS as a side by side comparison which came with a certified sRGB calibrated setting from the factory (even got a piece of paper!) with a very low Delta-e value for colour accuracy (low is good).
I've mainly been working on the colour settings, and some slight gamma tweaks on the Swift to get it as close to my dell as possible in a range of uses. Just using my eyes and brain, which are very good ;)

So, for you and anyone else that may be interested, these are my settings:

Monitor itself
Brightness: 21
Contrast: 50
Colour temp: User (R: 96 G: 96 B:100). Don't use any of the colour temp presets, they are all ass.

ICC/ ICM profile
In windows colour management (find it in control panel) I'm currently using the "ICM" profile that comes with the monitor driver, that you have to download and install from the Asus support website (for some stupid reason it's not on the CD that comes with the monitor).
It's called "Asus PG278Q color profile, D6500"
I've also tried the ICC from TFT central, but for now I'm finding the one described above to be a bit better.
Look on TFT central for info and guides about colour profiles and how to use and install them properly. IT'S IMPORTANT http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/icc_profiles.htm

Gamma tweak
The following is a work in progress. From the reviews I've read the gamma settings are supposed to be spot on straight out of the box (a 2.2 reading is supposed to be ideal), but I think it's just slightly too bright, on mine anyway. There is no actual monitor setting to tweak gamma on the Swift, so you have to do it in the NV control panel. I keep slightly changing and altering the values, but this is what I'm doing currently:
- Open NV control panel, go to "adjust desktop colour settings"
- Go to "2" and click the use Nvidia" settings radio button
- Slide the gamma slider down to between 90 and 95 depending on your taste. I'm on 92 at the moment
- Stay away from digital vibrance or hue! It's really not necessary and will really **** things up, especially hue. If you must add a bit of vibrance, be very careful and don't go over 55. (It's like photo editing, less is more really).

And that's it for now. With these settings I find it very very good for a TN panel in terms of colour accuracy. It also performs and looks well in various tests you can see at Lagom, especially the blacks http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php - worth a look at the other tests too.

I'm still tweaking slightly so it's a work in progress, but I hope this helps. :)

(I'll write up my findings on gaming later hopefully. Gsync is mostly good, but I'm a bit disappointed in some games tbh. Also - THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH BF4, SLI and Gsync as has been reported on blurbusters! Get terrible slight judders, worse than using regular vsync. At present I have to completely disable SLI in the NV control panel (Not just run on single card in the game profile) and run on one card only. This then is nice and smooth with Gsync, but it's disappointing not to be able to run higher framerates. Must be a driver issue, so let's hope it gets sorted.)

Wunkley these settings are awesome, thanks ever so much :D

Default I found the picture washed out but with the ICM file added and adjusted gamma the colours now really do pop.

Gotta say I am converted to G-sync. I have just had a little play around with a couple of games (Fifa 15 and Trackmania) and the higher hz of this monitor makes everything so smooth. Tomb raider and assassins creed 4 next!

Glad you're enjoying it...With Fifa15 you may need to (if you haven't already) forced 144hz with the button on the monitor, it also forces the frame rate to 144fps too :)

I run my screen on a Titan black at 1200 on the core and an i7 4770K and it runs great. Can't max out Battlefield admittedly not if I want to keep the frames around 135, but I only have to drop a few settings and it still looks good and is as smooth as a babies bottom :D

Hi pgi947

I applied the setting in NV control panel, manage 3d settings, global settings, preferred refresh rate to highest so all the games run at the highest possible setting.

Well, I learned something new today, I had it set to application controlled :p

Well, I have had this monitor a few weeks now and must say that I am still very impressed. Seriously enjoying gaming again and playing games I had bought but couldn't be bothered to play. Mrs isn't happy, as I am tucked up in my man cave and she gives me some what for now and then :D

Fantastic monitor

^Agree with that.
I've been gaming non stop since getting this monitor, would struggle to get into double figures on Steam for 2 weekly playtime, sitting around the 40hour mark constantly now.
