The Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q – a 27” 1400p 144Hz Monitor with G-SYNC

The AOC g2460Pg has been due at the end of June or early July for a while now. Some news websites jumped the gun by stating it was due earlier than that. I certainly agree with what you're speculating on regarding Nvidia having a lot to do with the fairly universal delay of G-SYNC monitors.

Like everything else they do, they've fallen into their own trap of completely closed, proprietary standards.

Had they made G-Synch an open spec that OEMs paid a license fee to implement in their monitors, and add to their monitors' controllers, I suspect we'd have seen plenty of monitors already.

But, no. It's completely closed. NVIDIA are completely responsible for the design and manufacture of the controllers, and different spec panels probably need different controllers. AFAIK, NVIDIA has no history of designing or having produced such circuitry before, so it's hardly a surprise that it's massively delayed.

By the time there are a decent number of G-Synch monitors out, Adaptive Synch (1.2a) will be out, and it should be effectively dead.

I looked up what you said and it's true...

I was about to buy this monitor and 2x 780ti's watercooled gaming pc... but now that we've waited so much, better things are already coming out.

Seriously, DP 1.2a makes gsync look like a joke. Vesa doesn't even charge for the license fee (not sure if that's something significant but it sounds good)

That's it, now that I've waited so long I'm just gonna wait even more for dp1.2a, x99 mobo, intel cpu etc..

More like £499+, Probably around the £600 mark. Im willing to pay anything up to 700 for this beast.

799 USD translates to ~560 GBP with the 20% VAT inclusive. So the absolute minimum it will be is £599.99. Given the extremely limited availability that has been confirmed by Gibbo, then it will probably add at least another £200-£300, based simply on the demand far outstripping the supply. Basically any retailer getting some stock very early will make an absolute killing.

I...just....nope....no words.

'Free-Sync' is nowhere to be seen yet. It's an unknown and has only been DEMOED. It's not been sent to reviewers last I checked.

It WILL NOT BE FREE.
WILL NOT BE FREE.
NOT BE FREE.
NOT FREE.

VESA charges for thier 'sticker', basically. Monitor manufacturers WILL pass on the R&D and time costs and they will add a premium for the technology. End of. There are also downsides to 'Free-Sync' which are well documented thus far.

I don't think I've ever seen so much crap in such a small amount of space. Since I'm fairly sure you're fully aware of the fact that what you're spewing is nonsense, I'll clarify for others.

G-Synch still only has the original prototype to purchase on a limited basis, 8 months after it was announced and NVIDIA promised multiple units would be coming 'very soon'.

Adaptive Synch is free. Because it's a recent VESA standard (1.2a). There are zero royalties to pay for Displayport or a "VESA sticker". So it will be free and is free.

Monitors either with 1.2a or firmware upgrades to support it will certainly appear sooner than 8 months after the spec was finalised.

Edit: What R&D costs? No special controller is needed (unlike G-Synch). The spec for Adaptive Synch in 1.2a just allows the graphics card to communicate with / control the respective refresh and frame rates of the monitors. The R&D cost would be AMD / NVIDIA / Intel writing a driver for it, which if costed would probably be fractions of a penny per product.

there's also the fact that it only works with a tiny subset of AMD cards, meaning most people will need both a new monitor and a new graphics card

last time I checked new graphics cards weren't free and neither were new monitors :/

To add to the confusion having DP1.2a compliance does not mean AdaptiveSync compliance, AdaptiveSync is an optional part of the VESA specification with its own compliance tests. What you will need is a monitor and graphics card that are both DP1.2a compliant with the optional AdaptiveSync compliance.

this monitors price will pretty much decide whether I get on gsync or be patient with its inevitable slow death by dp1.2a and the monitors that support it in 6 months.

anything like £800+ would be extortion and insulting since it should only be £600 at most. I can handle paying a premium ofcourse but we're already paying for the ROG name (which idc not one bit about, and frankly I think it's a REALLY tacky thing to do, even the crosshair gimick is just tacky, they want to put any bull on it for marketing)

I really hate nvidia anyway so kinda hoping price is super high so it turns me off completely so I can be more patient

If it didn't have gsync, this monitor should be £400 at the very very very most. It's TN for ****s sake! But it's the new TN I hear you cry. Yeah right. Add on the £150 premium that gsync seems to carry, and you've got £550.
I guarantee it will be loads more than this, and I won't be going near one.

erm, if you hate nvidia then why would you have any interest in a gysnc monitor anyway? you'll need nvidia GPU's to make use of it

It's the best monitor out now so I can understand the high price, and worse the limited stock. So only those willing to pay a high high price will get it otherwise OCUK will just have "out of stock" for months. So it's not their fault, I'm just angry at Nvidia causing these problems in the first place. **** Nvidia, they make the highest quality stuff but they really messed us around this time. High price > because of low amount of units > delays > all because of nvidia :/

I've always hated them because of their high prices (never owned a nvidia product), and I'm annoyed at them this time for messing us around. But I love their products and g sync works NOW. I'm a student so money can be a huge issue at times. This time I managed to scrape enough to buy a whole new system and I'm itching to do it but the prices are annoying me :/

edit: basically it's the perfect monitor, and we waited a while, prepared my mind even for up to £700 (which is ridiculous!!) now I hear the price will be even higher (understandable but painful) so now I'll have to sacrifice even more for it, I'll probably end up with two digits in my bank after this. If it surpasses my budget I'll be annoyed since I can't buy it and will have to settle for the AOC gsync or wait 6 more months for FreeSync.

edit2: btw what I mean by sacrifices is, that extra £100-£200 will come out of my new system. So instead of 780ti I'll have to settle for a 780, just because of a premium, like £50 extra for the ROG branding - £200+ extra for limited stock... I'll have to slowly strip bits from the system I'm going to buy (this is why I haven't bought my new system yet since the price on this monitor isn't confirmed)

lol... so let me get this straight you hate a company despite never owning one of their products because you think their prices are high...

smh

at tbh only the very high end is expensive for nvidia

the next level down and mid range cards are priced well with the competition

Fixed but puns aside mate if this is how you feel you might want to just stop waiting and buy something now because monitors move slowest out of all the pc components and are never perfect. Infact i would bet what you deem perfect now you will still be waiting on in ten years. I know because when they stopped making CRT's after 2000-2001 mine broke and i have had to put up with LCD's since then.

And to be fair there still isnt a monitor out there that matches that. 120hertz VA can come close but doesnt hold a candle to CRT motion.

ah you're probably right. I got my hate from friends circle jerking nvidia for the longest time. I'll make my own opinions now tbh, I'm going for nvidia because I believe they're better, and I think I'll have to own their products to love them. can't wait :)

yeah I can't do much about it if it's out of my butt-get I guess, will have to settle with AOC which is still pretty good tbh

What it is that made you so desperate for the swift? G-Sync wont change your world if you already use vsync. You will save a few frames tops 5% and have to put up with the triple buffering lag or vsync at 120fps.

Which i believe is 2 frames max, which is only sixteen milliseconds. I bet you could be just as happy with something else mate. Then again if you are a hardcore no vsync purist you probably will want to wait. Likewise if i was a 60hz gamer that just wanted rid of input lag and tearing then it would be a godsend to wait on AOC. But wait too long and you will be waiting for G-Sync 2!

I used 60hz and Vsync (with a 5ms monitor) before, Swift stands out to me because I can only imagine the smoothness upgrade (1ms, 144hz, gsync).

My reason is I want the smoothest most responsive monitor, even if gsync has little advantages, you can turn it off and enable ULMB which adds to smoothness in it's own way.

AOC has those features too which is why I may settle for it. But the Swift is 1440p 8bit TN and 3" bigger (I think) and I'm looking to keep it for a very long time.

AFAIK most people don't use VSYNC because of input lag. G-SYNC solves this.

But to be honest I would be buying this monitor with or without gsync because supports high res 120hz+ gaming. No other monitor does this.
