The Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q – a 27” 1400p 144Hz Monitor with G-SYNC

still working on it. 90% of the non gaming related parts are done now, but i have quite a few more response time, ULMB, G-sync and lag tests to complete. will be finished this week i really hope!

yeah, that was most likely a poor choice of words on my part. what i meant was how the colors will look like and whether it will be anything comparable to IPS/PLS.

for example, i could not stand the colors on the VG278, the blue was more like violet to me, and having the screen stand to a n IPS was painful to say the least.

hope you know what i mean :)

Yeah I know what you mean. I personally hope this model provides colours that are rich overall like a modern IPS rather than completely washed out or oversaturated like most current 120Hz+ models.

I still use a Samsung S27A750D as one of my monitors. That and similar models have by far the nicest image I've seen from a TN panel once tweaked. If the PG278Q can provide similar depth to shades (differences to screen surface aside) then that would be great.

What software/tools do you use to get the most out of your screens? I have a PANTONE Huey PRO.

It isn't really colour accuracy that will concern people but rather how rich colours look. I take issue with the notion of 'colour accuracy' in this sense.

I'm sure you're aware of this, but for those who aren't - readings from a colorimeter at the centre of the screen for colour accuracy are of little use when colours are not consistent throughout the screen. The colour accuracy may be very good in the centre of the screen, but the same shade will be represented differently on a TN panel below and above this in particular.

I am hoping that the SWIFT will give rich and reasonably well represented shades on the whole. Anything more is asking too much.

I'm worried about the colour/gamma shift on this monitor, when viewing at different angles (which I'd imagine is more noticeable on a larger screens). I know it's an inherent issue with TN panel's, but some are definitely worse than others.

Some of my screens are fully calibrated using a high-grade spectrophotometer and some using a regular Spyder4Elite. For my Samsung I primarily use it for gaming (and a reference when it comes to responsiveness) so I just use the Spyder4Elite to help correct the white point shift over time. Especially for gaming I don't feel any higher level of correction is necessary or particularly productive - unless I'm using a monitor that can't achieve a pleasing image through OSD corrections alone. Some of the 144Hz models for example.

Some are indeed a bit worse than others. The S27A750D, for example, is fairly good for a 27" TN panel in that regard. I still notice significant deviation in colour and gamma up and down the screen in particular, even when viewing the monitor head-on. I don't expect the ROG SWIFT to be any different in that regard - hopefully good for a TN panel in other words. Can't wait for the TFT Central review of course and also for ASUS to hand one over for me to test as well. :)

Do Asus send over one monitor for UK reviewers to test? Sort of like a "pass it along when you're done" kind of thing. Or do you get individual monitors to test and then keep?

Yeah thats what I also hoping for guys, a really good picture with nice colours :)

I agree about the VG278H whitch I have now, not having great colous as skuko said, compared to my plasma TV it look like crap. But of course one shouldent compare it to a Plasma heh.

But I really hope it will have a way better picture then my VG278H with better contrast as it can look a little washed out sometimes!

I have never received a monitor from ASUS directly (or their PR company) but usually companies have a few samples that get sent between reviewers. I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe Baddass got his sample from ASUS directly as they aren't exactly the easiest 'channel' to work with as a reviewer.

Especially if your the type of reviewer to go beyond the thin veneer which we have seen of late from the youtubers.

I went straight from CRT to a S23A700D, and was reasonably happy with it (possibly because I expected it to be much worse given it was my first LCD). So in theory, the Swift's panel should be a wee bit better than what I have. Add in the extra real estate, resolution and G-Sync and I should be satisfied once the price comes down a bit.

Oh and assuming Asus' QC is up to scratch. How are they in this regard?

even tho i bought mine a few days before this was published your review and calibrated settings helped me get the best out of my monitor
i was close to returning it cause i couldn't get it to look right

hope Baddass or someone sends you one for a few days so you can review it

Badass I think this monitor release surely has made this to be the most anticipated review ever for a monitor. There has got to be thousands of high end users wanting this thing. ;)

Looking forward to the review also, i've little doubt the next monitor they make will have the ability to have both lightboost and g-sync enabled at the same time though, that would surely look nice and it's apparently being worked on. No prob for me i can wait for that, sticking to 1080p for the time being anyway.

Maybe and then after that Asus ROG 4K 120hz TN. They are just waiting on Displayport 1.3 which is Q4 this year and a scaler to match. I reckon we could see one in announced early/mid 2015 as Asus are already talking about it. It does make sense as well as 4K/120 should be the new gaming format given that 4K is now the new craze.

But you can bet right now they will still go through all that effort and jump through a ton of hoops to fall flat at the AG coating. It is criminal not to offer a glossy version.

I am, yes. :) I'd need a bit longer with the monitor for a proper review. I'm sure I will be sent one eventually, hopefully sooner rather than later.

I should have one of these with me before the end of the week. Review to be done as quickly as humanly possible. Keep an eye on @TFTCentral on Twitter for updates as it arrives and as i test various bits :)

Glad I could help with you getting one m8, took enough time but got there in the end. Dropped you an email today if your interested in getting an Acer 4k G-Sync to review? :)
