The Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q – a 27” 1400p 144Hz Monitor with G-SYNC

So I've been playing around with ULMB and GSYNC today and I personally feel that GSYNC feels very smooth, but compared to ULMB or does not feel as snappy. When I'm using GSYNC it feels like there is some sort lag present - difficult to explain but I play BF4 very aggressively and when I have ULMB on I just feel that much more capable - like the only lag present is the netcode.

Would appreciate views from those of you who have this monitor as I'm worried this is all in my head haha.

What amounts to an effective elimination of motion blur with ULMB vs. a small but to some significant degree with G-SYNC would explain this effect. It's something Mark R of Blurbusters refers to as 'brain lag' which I feel is quite a nice way of describing it. But do you 'enjoy' the stuttering if your frame rate on BF4 drops below the refresh rate of the monitor? That is something most people find very painful.

I've lowered my settings in BF4 so I can maintain more consistent framerates. What I've found odd is that I'm really noticing when I'm off at close range - infact I've been slowly dropping my sensitivity since getting this monitor.

I've been running 120Hz for a few years now so perhaps I'm not noticing the tearing as much.

I play UT a lot, noticed the same thing with G-Sync on, feels like the mouse isn't quite as responsive.

Lag with Gsync as opposed to ULMB and no sync is that what you mean? I think the Nvidia board has 786mb of memory to hold 1 frame if i understood the spec sheet correctly?

So whatever framerate you were at 60 (16ms) 120 (8ms) you will know how much lag you are feeling. Full on Vsync should be 2 frames with triple buffering. So yes there should still be a feeling of 8ms of lag compared to no vsync and no double/triple buffering.

Yep if GSYNC gives you that laggy mouse feeling like VSYNC does then I think I'll just wait for some of the cheaper versions to land later this year or next year. Not paying £700 to use ULMB lol.

i kind of agree but what fps are you running at with BF4

i run SLI 780s and at 1440p with a mix of ultra and high with 2xMSAA my fps was on average 70-110fps and it did kind of feel like v-sync lag in some cases probably when the fps was at its lowest

but disabled x2 AA and now its locked at 118 most of the time and it felt a lot better with g-sync

but will still disable it tho not to say g-sync is bad its still very good and playable but ulmb with a stable high frame rate is superior for a game like BF, CoD or CS

i will use g-sync for Crysis 3 and other games that run at 50-80fps

Sounds to me like you have V-SYNC ON ..

Plus there was a news reports from nivida and they did say that some older games wont benefit from g-sync ,I mean why would you need it with old games any way ..

No absolutely not. I double checked and triple checked nvidia control panel and the ingame BF4 settings. There is no way I had vsync on. Testing was in BF4..

I'm running everything on low except mesh with no AA. I find that the other settings don't really add much for me (I spend allot of time in the hurtlocker).

I didn't pay £700 for gsync, thats crazy. There is allot more to this monitor than just gsync. You just need to read Baddass's review to see this.

But the only thing is that the light is green? in that video on bf4? I thought it turns red when g-sync is on.

And I really wont this monitor I have it in my basket and all ready to pre order from ocuk but this lag people on about just halted me from pressing pay button?

I watched this video and the guy says you have to turn on g-sync in NVidia control panel and then set vertical sync in global setting as g-sync.

Then in games turn on v sync in game but it will use g-sync instead?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-u-6i_RJRI around 7 min mark on wards.

He says no lag what so ever?

This is the first thing I tried but I believe he is incorrect. To run GSYNC, you need to turn it on within nvidia control panel.

You do not use V-SYNC ingame man go check asus web site ..

Go to the part where its says ..

How do I know if G-Sync is running in game?

The monitor power LED light will turn red indicating G-Sync is on. V-Sync needs to be disabled in the PC game settings and G-Sync enabled in the Nvidia control panel. Then the game must be run in full screen.
Typically scenes that go quickly from high to low frame-rate (or vice-versa) pronounce the G-Sync effect more strongly, allowing the user to notice its inherent effect on game play smoothness.

Seems a lot people saying two different things even in you tube reviews ::confused:

Even if it turns out there is lag you realise it is at most 8ms? This still makes the Swift pretty much the best 144hz monitor out there with ULMB etc. So personally i would not worry too much.

Maybe people have messed up the settings if vsync is indeed to be turned off in game then try disabling triple buffering too and capping fps at 120 or 144. Pre rendered frames or flip queue should be 1 as well if on single cards.
