Utd fans have spent the majority of the past 3-4 years begging Scholes to retire, begging Fergie to replace him and complaining about his pace and how the midfield plays when he's in it, while Chelsea fans have been begging the club to keep him, while Lampard has been consistently one of if not the best scorer each seasons and continues to do so.
Scholes AT HIS BEST, was one of the best in the world, but he was actually at his best for a relatively short space of time. The guy he was, isn't the guy he's been for pretty much the last decade.
He's broken 10 league goals twice in his career, 95-96 and 02-03, in all competitions he's reached 20 a single time, in 02/03, and been between 10-14 goals 7 times which is absolutely not bad. However for 8 years straight he hasn't broken 7 goals in all competitions, and in all but that one year he got the 7 goals, he hasn't got above 4 goals.
Lampard, since 02/03 has only dropped below 15 goals in all competitions twice, and been above 20 goals 5 times(in a row). In the past decade Scholes has scored 62 goals, Lampard has scored 196 goals. In the same time period Scholes has gotten roughly 31 assists while Lampard has gotten 123 assists.
Scholes was always at basically the best team in the league, lampard spent a lot of time at a significantly less good West Ham side. Over their entire career's I would say Lampard has had more top seasons than Scholes as, and in the past decade, there isn't even any competition as to which has been the better player. I think Scholes at his absolute best was as good or a bit better than Lampard in his best year, but in terms of effectiveness, both defensively, and scoring and assisting directly, Lampard has proven to be the better player.
For me Scholes around 99-04 was probably the best midfielder in the world. Since then he hasn't been close to the same player. At the same time I think Lampard in the past 7-8 years has been the significantly better player, not hugely worse for a couple years before that, and the less good player through the 90's, but he was closer to Scholes in the 90's than Scholes has been to Lampard through the past decade.
