I think Sunderland will be lucky to pick up 3 points, but so what, they have to play them so they play them.
Conversely they will having dispatched essentially every top team at home by xmas and have an easy run after xmas. Which is actually better, facing a top team every 2nd or 3rd home game and getting smashed and not getting any form. Or facing them all together, realising you won't win, then knowing the rest of the season there is major points up for grabs, win 1 or 2 games, get some form and they won't have a big opponent to come in and end that form.
In many ways its better to get the tough games out the way, rest players, and face easier teams towards the end of the season when smaller squads are tired.
