The Black Friday 17 Thread! - pls make sure you understand competitor rules

Yeah I'm not sold on these lights.
I like dim warm white lighting. If it' not dark lights are off. If it's dark i like a dimly lit room.

If I had an Alexa (or similar) and it worked well I can understand the luxury appeal. But definitely not if you need to get phone out.

Wouldn' wwant motion sensor as don' aalways want them on when in room. Feels like not real benifit as at best only 'automated' some of the time. As In you still obviously need to turn motion sensing on or off.

If they were 15 quid that would be different, but still don't see the massive benifit if I'm honest

Reading the latest threads seems like if you go the automated route, the whole hog is required. No point just going half *****. Then I can see the benifit.

Dunno if I'd personally fancy the hassle

I grabbed the Nintendo Switch with Mario Odyssey for £279 last night, sold out now but worth keeping an eye out for if it comes back in stock. It's exactly what my kids wanted for Christmas - a bit pricey for a Christmas present but I'll be using it too!
You got that at a great price !! - usually it's hard to find stock at £329

I personally don't understand why someone posts a statement like that. What's its purpose? Do you want to try and understand? If so, ask a question. If not, why the post? A little like Psycho Sunny, who just looked to want to **** them off, then it turns out he actually just wants to understand what people do and could have saved us half a page of pointless posts...

I've looked at them, read up on them etc. etc. My opinion hasn't changed. There is nothing about them that would benefit our household. I think the route I have taken works for us. If they're for you that's fine but you should also accept others may not agree with you.

We went a different way with the smart lighting using Z-Wave dimmer modules behind normal dumb (although momentary) switches and normal dumb bulbs. The dimmer modules are quite handy because as well as controlling a local load (i.e. the light that would usually be controlled by the switch) they can have a second switch connected up that can control something else wirelessly.

This lets us:

* Switch hall lights lights on/off with motion (useful when coming home with shopping, or carrying glasses of water, iPads, toddler etc upstairs of an evening)
* Control two sets of dumb Ikea kitchen worktop lights plugged in to different sockets as a single group from a second switch on the main kitchen light switch
* Where a room was made open plan by previous owners, we can now control both sets of lights from the switches by the doors at either end without running extra wires (or if we wanted to we could join them as a single logical unit)
* Occasionally use phone to control lights, but not often, usually turning stuff off from the other floor. Will probably hook up to Alexa at some point

Keeping it on topic, Vesternet have a Black Friday sale which features some of the above Fibaro modules, and while they are well priced in the sale, similarly to other Black Friday deals, the items have been similarly priced during other sales throughout the year.

Anyone else tempted by the iRobot Roomba 650 for £229?

Temptation for a robot hoover is large but given I can't justify some bits for my cars I struggle to see why I'd choose to spend it on a robot vacuum instead :p

Bought even more car cleaning stuff today... don't need to buy any more for a few years now!

What gets me is questioning why people on a tech forum like tech stuff.

It's like swanning into the Piston Heads forum and asking "Uhh...are you all spending so much money on cars? My Dacia does fine."

Not everyone likes the same types of tech, if we did then we would all own the same things and how boring would that be?

if you dont want colour, its 2 for £25 so well under what you said.
why would you need to turn sensing on and off? there's little point having a motion sensor in lounge etc. but great for a hallway. You never need the lights on permanently on in a hallway, the post above about leaving them on all evening is such a waste for example.

they're also great if you want a dimly lit room, full control over brightness without retrofitting dimmer switch and can set up profiles, like if you watch a movie a lot of us like a darker room then if we are doing other stuff.

I have no issue with people that don't want or see the need for this sort of thing. I'm just saying I don't know why you post telling us you don't see the gain for you as you don't live in a tarts boudoir. Seemed pretty stupid statement to me, insinuating that that's the only reason you would want coloured and automated lights makes you come across as a little silly to me.
