The Black Friday 17 Thread! - pls make sure you understand competitor rules

Physco sonny you should write product reviews, I'd deffo read them :p
Pretty much yeah :D

you deffo fell for marketing guff then.

for instance the difference between a £400 blender (vitamix) and a £100 one (nutri ninja) is vast as is the difference to a £20 breville jobbie from argos.

however when it comes to hairdryers. spend £20 on a decent one and the job is done.

Only thing from the 'sale' was a Ninox Venator mouse for £20 which seemed worth a go as my cat killed my Nexus Reveal :(

Are we really arguing over cost vs performance of a hairdryer?

Cost generally increases exponentially with features/performance/efficiency regardless of product. It's not a big revelation.

You want a hair dryer that's 1% better than the model below? Pay £££ more for it.

I picked up 3 kindle fire hd 7 inchers as home automation controllers. £29.99 each and a couple of tweaks and they run the Google play store and all the relevant apps. Much cheaper than iPod touches or iPad minis. Bargain!

I needed to use one. I didn't realise the length of my hair had any effect on the stickiness of decals or phone skins tbh. I'll head down the barbers next time before I try! Thanks!

Having gone through this process last year for the other half, no, a £20 hair dryer isn't apparently just as good. In fact, the one I got last year is apparently "amazing" and "never dried her hair so quick" and "best hair dryer ever". Much research was done and personal recommendations obtained.

Like last year... not much worth looking at - although the various OLED deals were pretty good.

The thing is, OLED is both high price and falling in price anyway so the deals will likely be significantly bettered within 6 months and possibly in Boxing Day sales. Whereas some other items may be hitting the trough in terms of how low they will go.

I was hoping to buy a >55" 4k HDR TV (non-OLED) but missed all the good deals.

After some research, it would seem that OLED tvs won't ever drop any lower than the offers we saw over black friday. If you can pick up a 55" B7 for £1300 then snap it up

New models are released around April every year.

Best time to buy is when the old models are made EOL around mid January to march. It can happen any time during that 2 month period.

You need to be on the ball though as it's to clear the little stock they have forever so once it's gone, it's gone.

I have bought 2 TV's during that period and they were half their original price 6-8 months previously. Basically need to do a Google 3 times a day and check every site selling them then quickly send a price match query to John Lewis and hope it gets accepted and in time.

Yeah but the OLEDs are unlikely to come down less than £1300. Then they'll just stop making this year's panel and it's on to next year. I was reading all about it on avforum too. They were talking about how some places still stocking 2015/2016 panels and they're hardly giving them away.

I bought nothing, was eyeing up the £130 Dell monitor, but I have no room for a monitor at the mo, so passed on it.

The Hue obsession is funny, we just got some Lifx bulbs at half the price.

Probably because they bought them at too high a price and don't want to make a loss. Much bigger margins in LCD's so they can afford to get rid of a few. OLED isn't as lucrative. Which is why you see some stores holding onto old stock until it slowly sells.

It will come down in price over time. We need more people buying it though. The masses keep on buying LCD because it's far cheaper and the quality difference isn't big enough for them to notice it.

I saw OLED's in costco running a poorly compressed feed. They looked no different to the LCD's beside them. Just shows you how they aren't being pushed by retailers.

I switched from a slow iPad 2 last year and I've never looked back. I upgraded iOS because it kept nagging me, and it totally broke my iPad. I didn't even use it for any intense use but it ran like rubbish in the end. I chose the Fire HD8 and it's brilliant for what I use it for. I watch Netflix, SkyGo, Amazon Video and browse the Internet. My little boy plays Farming Simulator 17 and Minecraft, and I'm happy for him to use it because it cost me £80. I don't think I'll ever buy an iPad again. The Fire tablet is quick and responsive, and I can add an SD card for more storage. I can read my Kindle books if I don't have my Kindle with me, and the books look ok on the screen. If it breaks out of warranty, I'll just replace it. And at the moment they're £50 which is even better!

In exactly the same boat as you and am now considering a tablet other than an iPad.

I use mine currently & only for SkyGo so have no need or affinity to an Apple product for this. I've plenty of other non-essential needs though I need to decide what these actually are :p

I am so happy with my Fire tablet. The 8 inch tablet is small enough to fit into my work bag, so I can take it with me to watch TV shows on my lunch, or whatever else I want to use it for. I play some games on it and it's surprising how well it performs. I've been playing Farming Simulator 18 by GIANTS Software and it's a full 3D game and it runs really well. And there's obviously the Netflix, Amazon Instant Video and SkyGo app usage as well. It runs everything I've asked it to perfectly well. I thought that I'd miss some of my old Apple apps, but to be honest most of them were just clogging up space on the iPad and I very rarely every used any of them after the initial phase of using them.

In all honesty, wasn’t that iPad like 7 years old? I’ve got an iPad 4 and it’s 5 years old, it won’t upgrade past ios10, but it’s still in mint condition and runs sky go etc fine. It does chug a bit but it’s far from broken. I’d say I’ve had pretty good value tbh!

It was old, yes, but until I updated it, the iPad was running well enough for my use. It isn't about perceived value. I find it ridiculous that I was being constantly nagged to update, and then after the update it is unusable and you cannot revert back to the previous iOS version. I have the option to jailbreak I suppose, but I don't really have time fiddle about with this, what with having two small children at home. I also don't believe in having to stop using something that was perfectly fine for my needs just because the operating system has caused performance issues. In this day and age it seems to be the done thing to just upgrade a device year after year. It's wasteful and if something is doing what I wanted it to do, why should I have to look at spending another £400 or so just to get a newer version to do the same thing, only with a shinier OS that I probably don't need?

I'm happy with my fast, working tablet for £80 :)

You'd think after all these years developing the OS they'd make it more efficient not heavier on the system (that applies to Android also btw). Kinda kills off the second hand market as well unless you buy a recent model.

not happy with debenhams right now. placed an order on thursday night when the sale went live, got an email on wednesday saying the item is no longer in stock and will not be sent (6 days later) only to check the website today to find the item in stock and back to full price.

Just took delivery of a Corsair RGB strafe mx silent keyboard yesterday and found out this morning the website I purchased from discounted it to £72 today! So I have placed another order at that price and sent the other one back already for refund, they wouldn't do a partial refund.
