The BMW Question?

Lancer Evolution 5's are absolutely BRILLIANT cars. I dont think this argument is worth having if you can slate one in favour of...well...much else.

Well I do seem to have created a bit of a monster, I never really expected that when I posed the question; though come to think of it ;) Always gets the emotions flowing this one, nice to see it's doing just that. Some good points, some obvious and expected perceptions driven by the old stereotypes, with some basis in truth but mostly utter rubbish when the bigger picture is looked at, and something about a Chevette, I mean it's got EVERYTHING now :D

The HSR Chevette was one hell of a lot of fun and if I could find space for that and an RS1800 or Mexico I would in a flash. Those cars are great fun so I can see what our man is saying. Is it better in the feeling stakes well not as I recall, though it's been some years since I last drove one of them. Is it as fast, well not really no, is it as much fun, well I can see his point, you don't need loads of speed to have fun and if you do you have a lot to learn about driving I would suggest. The real fun starts with bends not with the straight bits, and those old cars may be a handful but can be driven in a drift, at safer speeds with ease and a big smile!

I sense this one might just keep going… :D

Ok, what sort of BMW do you suggest I can test drive? I'm up for having a good test drive of one, just remember I'm still 19, so that could be an issue.

330Ci Sport but you won't be driving it properly on your first time, you need to develop confidence with the car..

Not everyone likes the same cars and feel. Otherwise everyone would have the same cars.

So what if I didn't like the Evo 5, it's not the style of car I like. Doesn't make my say worth anything less.

Fair enough, you willing to go test drive a P6 or 2500 PI in return? Would be interesting I would think.

Very difficult though as such cars tend to be for sale only through private individuals or small classic car retailers, neither of whoms time do I think it is fair to waste in the name of making OcUK more interesting :(

Ive wasted a fair few people's times driving a few GTO's and 540i's and suchlike :p

Driven or been in one? No I thought not. So what it doesn't go round a corner as fast as a 330Ci? This does not automatically mean it will be boring. Unlike the 330 it will feel like the speed you are doing, whereas in the 330 when you are going 60 you feel like you are doing closer to 40.

The thing with a slower car you can have a lot more innocent fun in one. You won't be worrying about the police on a country road as unlike the 330, you won't be doing in the 100mph area.

Fun isn't dictated by the bhp or your max cornering G, just remember that one.

Aye, I remember a Clarkson program, think it was his top 100 cars, and he said that the E-Type handled brilliantly, not because it went massively fast but because it involved you in the driving and made you feel good for it.

Oh well we can find a nice empty industrial estate at the next motors meet and you can have a punt in mine......not in the same class but it'd be interesting anyway :D

*sigh* BMW fanbuoys!
Ah yes, the aforementioned stereotypical response, thanks for that, I will tick it off the list. Got anymore in there or is that you done, must have taken a bit of time to build that one up so I would imagine you need a rest now?

Well back OT a bit. I like what a BMW offers. A rewarding drive with what seems to be better than average reliability and build quality. They know how to make a quick car thats for certain and most of the range is good looking.

I would own one - i think it would give peace of mind (mostly). But it has a certain stigma attached to it that would put me off a little.

Good point, but when I saw this I really had to force myself to read any further ;)

Oi. ;)

Clarkson must be one of the most down-to-earth car reviewers about (not that I really know any).

Who else would be able to get out of driving a supercar and then sit in a Focus and still rave about the handling, power delivery and still be able to give a level headed review on the car? All this despite it being x hundred bhp down.

I get the impression there's a few people on here that certainly wouldn't.

Yet on Top Gear he said it was apalling, and a real downside of owning such a classic. Same thing was said of the Aston Martin DB4.

I would agree, but ask him the same question another day and his answer would most likely be different. He is an entertainer much more than a level headed motoring journalist in my eyes, which is why I find him highly entertaining but choose to look elsewhere for clarity on a topic, or if possible try things for myself. Doesn't mean I don't think he often makes a solid or good point, just that that point may change with his mood, or to fit in with his bigger point….

Just thought, any reason for the 330Ci over the 330i other than looks? If it is just looks I'll test drive the 330i as don't they go for cheaper?
