This may sound stupid but my car came with BMW Seal & Protect from the factory and for some reason, dirt just does not stick to it. I hadn't washed the car in over a month, took it to a PH meet and everyone commented on it being clean.
Its been sitting on the driveway since the end of November in the elements; I've done 300 miles in it since being home and it is still gleaming. I'm sure its something to do with the seal and protect.

Or... The fact that your car is grey :p

Guys - i need a couple of good quality wheel brushes, one to get in the corners of the face (where sponge won't go) and one to clean the insides (dishes).

Suggestions? I was thinking... this and this

I'm not sure about the extra long one though, would this be long enough to clean behind the spokes/dish of the wheel?

I've got the normal sized EZ detail brush - cleans the inside pretty well, but I use a cheapo Tesco one to scrub the outside/spokes. With these long bristle brushes, be prepared to get a face full of dirt when you 'withdraw' :D

What's with the E39 Touring?
I thought your parents had an E60..

The EZ detail brush is the only one worth bothering with, and then swissvax style brushes for the fronts and nooks/crannies.
