The polish is done once and the wax keeps the polish there year round. That's why I use Colinite 476s as it lasts pretty much a whole year.

Wax keeps the polish there? You don't "keep" polish on your paintwork

Waxing (or sealant) is your paintwork's only protection against the elements of day-to-day driving. I probably re-wax once a month on average.

No perhaps I worded it wrong so let me try again.

The polish won’t last long at all, SRP lasts weeks down here without a wax on top to stop the weather beating it away. Without applying 476s I notice SRP alone will be gone after a month’s worth of washing. That’s what I meant by “keeping it there”.

You mean the effects of polishing won't last as long, ie the paintwork won't stay smooth for long? If so, then yes. Using a proper cutting polish (rather than a filler polish like SRP) will last longer (even without wax), but I'd not recommend leaving bare paintwork unprotected.

Waxing does take more effort than applying a liquid sealant like Auto Glym Extra Gloss Protection*, but the glossy/wet look and beading won't be as pronounced as with a decent wax.

I'd probably recommend a better cutting polish (if the car hasn't been done before/for ages), and simply sealing with EGP if you want an efficient ratio of effort:results.

By all means use SRP once the paintwork is in a good enough condition that a filler polish can remedy the light marring the car will pick up from day-to-day use, but unless it's at that point already, get a polish with some "cut" first.

*I actually use EGP on my glass/lights with each wash

Ah cool, I think I get it now. Will get what's in my list and then add wax later. Give her a damn god scrub and polish and then only wash next couple of times then rinse and repeat.

Don't think I've ever polished my car. I think it's a pointless task unless you take it to a pro detailer to do a proper job at removing swirls.

I think I've only polished mine once, but then it's silver and so you can barely notice imperfections and it looks great once it's washed / clayed / Dodo Juice'd.

I wouldn't say it's a pointless task. Far from it. Hard work, yes.

Is there anything you'd recommend that can be applied by hand? I've got SRP but my MX5 is going to need something a little stronger first time round!

In the past I've used 3M Perfect It III (fine) followed by 3M Imperial Hand Glaze topped off with Harly Wax which works well but it is chuffin hard work :p

It's far from pointless. Yes granted you may not have the tools to get the best job out of it. But even working polish in by hand is still worth it over not doing it.

Even if you don't remove swirls or use much cutting power, it still cleans the paint well for wax.

Not the best idea, using a polish as a cleaner will create more marring than if you didn't bother.

Clay or remove contaminants before polishing with a solvent like Iron-X.

Hi

I literally have 0 cleaning products for the car and thought it was about time I actually did it manually. I don't have access to a power washer (I live on a main road and getting power / cables everywhere would be an issue).

I wondered if someone could recommend a 'beginners' package (preferably off Amazon as I have vouchers there!). I know I'll need a mitt and some shampoo/foam but that's about it!

If someone has recommendations they'd be gratefully received!

Need a new rear plate.

Can anyone tell me how to stop dusty/sandy spots from appearing all over my car after it rains?

It happens after the rain has dried or 'beading' and I haven't driven it off the drive. Sometimes I wonder if having no wax/beading and just having the water sheet would look better after rain. :o
