The Dell 3008WFP Thread

MR.B,

When viewing HD movies in windows using the screens native resolution of 2560 x 1600, and using a software player, like PowerDVD, does the movies display in full HD mode, without the movie picture being stretched to much, etc? or do you have to drop the resolution down to 1920x1080 for proper HD content display? and what`s this screen like for standard movie format playback, like XviD, DivX, DVDs, etc?

With WMV, Power DVD, Quicktime and anything else, any HD content is still displayed in HD when using 2560x1600 res... i'm confused why you think it wouldn't? With 1080p for example it's scaled to 2560x1600 to fill the whole screen, and it dont lose the aspect ratio or look deformed or anything, and it looks just as sharp. It's the same kind of thing as when viewing 720p video on a 1080p screen.

@ Drazek, i'm sure your'll like it! ;D I took the stand off mine and have the bottom of the monitor resting on my desk with a wall mount holding it up ...i'll take a pic when i can be arsed to clean my desk.

Oh i see what you mean now.. and HD content looks perfectly fine on the 3008.

A lot of the people in that thread dont know what they are talking about...
Yep, it will look pretty poor, at least with a 24" display the drop to 1280*1024/1440*900 isnt so bad, but from 2560*1600? Damn, thats really going to blur allot.

...for instance this should be common sense, but being as the 3008 has way more pixels than a 24" 1920x1200 monitor dropping the res to a non-native res on the 3008 will look better than on just about any other monitor - fact. And obviously i know this from experience as i have 24" and 30" and all sorts.

You have nothing to worry about.

And the whole thing about needing something like quad SLI to run games at 2560x1600 is stupid. My setup (see sig) will run any Source engine based game at 2560x1600 with AA. It will run UT3 at 2560x1600 at a perfectly smooth frame rate aswell on the games highest settings.

I take it, only games like Crysis won't run with playable frame rates on 2560x1600, but most other new games like Call Of Duty 4 and Medal of Honor Airborne, are able to reach playable frame rates at that resolution with everything turned up? and I was also wondering if the windows icons and stuff on the desktop look very small when on 2560x1600?

I've not got COD4 so cant say, but the graphics look pretty good on it so it may be able to run at 2560x1600 on single card setup (new GTS, GTX, Ultra...) but if you have to drop res to 1920x1200 it will still look really good, nearly as sharp as 2560x1600. I used to have a problem with running anything lower than the native res on my 24" Dells, but with the 3008 it's really not a problem and dont bother me because it still looks great. Especially anything from 1920x1080 to 2048x1536.

Have you used a 23" 1920x1200 LCD before? because thats about how small the icons and that are on the 3008 when at native res. Because each pixel is a little smaller than on a 24" monitor so icons are a bit smaller when they're both on there native res, so it's about the same as with a 23" monitor with 1920x1200. It's a nice size.

I`m on a 19" CRT Monitor right now.

On Vista with 'medium icons' they are slightly smaller than a penny.

i use classic icons on vista with a 19" crt on 1280 x 1024 ... "medium" is just way too big for me...

might have to turn it up to medium when i get this new screen though ;o

Mr.B - completely stupid question relating to 1080p HD Content but..
running 1080p HD Movies in window mode via WMP is perfectly plausable also right? you'll still see the movie in a 1920x1080 window with no scaling/aspect issues? - i mean as long as you don't mind not watching a movie in full screen that is... generally so you can get on with some website reading (or work) somewhere among the other thousands of pixels you'll have spare while that movie is playing in the corner ;p

2 days to go till pay day!!! gimme screeeeen, gimme screeeeeeeeeen!

it would seem so Sylver! - i'll be placing my order for this screen in exactly 6 hours!

Drazek, when you have fully tested this screen and have the time, could you please post back
your experience as well, so as to let us know how you get on, and what you think of the screen?

Thanks!;)

Well if the movie window is set to exactly 1920x1200 then each pixel of the movie will line up with 1920x1200 pixels on the screen and it will be perfect. If the window is any smaller than that size for 1080p then obviously you will lose out on pixels and you wont be viewing it in 1080p, but scaled down. But theres no issues i've seen with this, and this largely depends on what software player is used. Some will scale better than others.

I've just updated my review with viewing angles, and a small issue i have with the screens anti-reflective coating (near the bottom of the review).

looks like the place i was going to order my screen from hasn't had their shipment come in yet :(

so i'm going to have to wait till next week before i place my order.

i'll post my own experiances (probably update one of my posts on the first page) when i get it.

Mr.B - when do we get to see some pictures of your screen in action? ;p - i wanna drool at the mighty XBox and PS3 running off that lovely screen of yours, and ofcourse let's not forget Crysis!.

- ooh, random question.. what letter does the monitor go up to when you open a full screen excel sheet?

It goes to 'AM' which is 13 letters past Z (this is with Excel 2007 BTW)

I'll try and take some pics tonight...

Theres already 360 pics up under the console part :p no point taking PS3 pictures, it's exactly the same as running PC over DVI @ 1920x1080.

Just added a Crysis pic under 'Resolution Scaling', and added a pic of my monitors at the bottom of the review.

Finally recieved my DELL 3008WFP! ;D

i had to buy it from some company in scotland ;o (was the only place i could find it in stock!) - but i got them to do a full dead pixel check before sending it to me etc etc.. not a single dead pixel, perfect condition ;D

first thing i have to say is though, i don't think Mr.B gave the wow factor on this screen enough justice...

this screen has some -serious- wow factor! like, omgwtfbbq-wow!

i absolutely love the bolt-gun metal brushed alluminium bezel ;D and the screen real estate it just insane.

- gonna take a pic of my own and test out my 360/ps3, just to confirm Mr.B's lovely review ;)

... after i follow Mr.B's handy calibration suggestions!

wow... just wow, just... wow. wow.... wow.
