The disappearance of Nicola Bulley

I'm not sure a character assassination of a missing person in the national press is the wisest of choices?

The police are stuck on the usual bind where the same characters are going to criticise them whatever they do.

Hold some information back... 'what are the police hiding' wild speculation continues regardless.

Not give any specifics of issues that would make the missing person more vulnerable than others - more of the same and specualtion/ digging to fill in the gaps.

Provide more information - criticised for relating roo much information about rhe missing person.

I imagine that Lachashire police had spoken to the family ahead of releasing ore information and had agreed that all not ideal that it would be best to confirm some information about the missing persons background to at least somewhat try and contain the already wild speculation online and in the media and try and reduce the amount of media and Internet fame seekers actions causing disruption to their missing person investigation.

A police 'mess up' would involve something like a body turning up in an area already searched.

The police not being able to find a missing person doesn't mean the police have messed up regardless of what some pundits and members of the public may think.

Yeah I mean people love to bash the police at any opportunity, but given the information available at the time - would anybody have done anything differently? It was obvious that the river is the absolute prime candidate for where she might be, I don't really see what else could have been different.

I mean, they could have diverted some of their finite resources and searched much further down towards the sea, but if they did that - they might not have been able to rule out the bench area 100%. If they'd have later found her near the bench - people would have lost their minds...

The police are stuck between a rock and a hardplace, I think their theory is sound with her going in the river - but they're never going to be able to please everyone. Especially the internet sleuths - who are coming up with all these insane silly theories, but only due to hindsight that the river is pretty much 100% clear.

Surely the time has come to disband many public services and move into the digital age.

Policing, sentencing, even medical diagnosis are all easily handled by simple public consensus. With modern technological developments we're now able to fully harness this valuable resource and do away with such costly and ineffective professions.

This would be awesome, a bit like watching Big Brother but with public sniper rifles and nooses.

Joking aside, it would be too open for corruption. So no change then.

I think it was a bad move the police revealing any information because it's not helpful in the slightest beyond giving fuel to guessmongers.

That said, I did watch the press conference the other day and the press have a lot to answer for. Several times different reporters asked why she was vulnerable and that the police should say what her vulnerabilities were to "avoid speculation".

In effect the press were saying give us something or we'll make crap up.

Now the Police foolishly revealed something and the same press is castigating them for it.

I think the police should have said something along the lines that "she had issues that may have contributed to her disappearance". There was absolutely no need to publish all the details.
Isn't that exactly what they initially did? Followed by a new glut of speculation about what they were so they had to provide details?

I think you have used the term "Character Assasination" incorrectly, because it was not done out of malice. What they've done is air her dirty laundry in public.

The issue is that this case became too big for its own good. With almost 24 hour coverage on every little thing the police are doing and armchair detectives, deciding to leave the comfort of their armchair. They were kind of forced into releasing more information, to quell the rampent speculation.

That's not why it was done, they were pre-empting that the information would be leaked to/by the press:
