The Dissertation/FYP thread 2008

Im in the same boat megalo..

putting my report together and its always felt so disjointed with my sections all over the place.. but it now finally looks logical..

Hmm, stupid question; it's been a few years since I had to write my an essay with references... Should they be put alphabetically in the references section, with references in the body of the essay like , or in the order referred to in the text, as in

???

using word? theres a reference function built in 2007 along the top =)

You can do the (1) [1] thing if you want, but you can also used the date/author too etc. theres too many ways to reference tbh!

Monkey - In Psychology at least it's always...

It has been proved that OcUK is extremely informative (SideWinder,2008)

Or

SideWinder (2008) has looked into how informative OcUK is.

Format > Page. Then turn on header or footer depending where you want them.

Then click in the header or footer and go Insert > Field > Page Number.

Whoops, got talking, forgot to submit what I'd written... :)

Monkey Puzzle, I personally think writing in words for references i.e.

"It was claimed Nitefly is awesome (Nitefly et al., 1999)..."

Looks far more professional. Its up to you if you think its worth the effort. Oh and watch the word count rise ;)

You count your refences and footnotes in the word count? Bit unusual isn't it? We were always told that they didn't count so if we were struggling reducing to the word limit we could always chuck some of it into footnotes.

Yeah, I ended up doing that; it sounds better. Though I had a bit of a nightmare - I wrote it in open office and saved it as various word files and then when I got to the library to print it off the damn pictures wouldn't load.:( They were very understanding, luckily, and I have an extension until noon tomorrow to finish it.

Yep, the references count towards the word count for mine. Ridiculous really, I ended up referencing papers written by fewer people because I didn't want to lose 20 extra words on extra authors!:p

Everything in the main text (all text, figure legends etc) is included in the word count for myself. The only thing which is excluded is the reference list at the end and the title page. This is incredibly frustrating since my dissertation was limited to 6,000 words, several diagrams had to go.

The only decent way I can count the words in mine is with the "detex" command, so all my references just appear as one word as that's how they're indexed. Even though when the report is generated it might be 3 or 4 words... Not that I'm close to my word count :)

Oh god, when mine was printed just about everything went wrong. Diagrams had bits missing, the footer was the wrong colour on some pages... I was in the print shop for an hour sorting it out. By the way, a little bit of effort can make it look much more professional. A single line for the header wouldn't go amiss, along with a footer.
