The Dissertation/FYP thread 2008

Opted not to do a dissertation in the end. Had decided on doing something based on governance and economic growth but was getting too bogged down in the maths and opted to do an extra module instead. Regret it in some ways, as it would have nice having a big project that was purely mine and get my teeth into. It also means I've got 5 exams this year. On the other hand, a 10,000word regression-based project would have been hell. Got my job offer and am doing a pretty hefty professional qualification with that (CA+CTA), so hasn't harmed me too much.

Good luck everybody :)

I've still got another year before I even decide what I'm going to do for my FYP. Have absolutely no idea what I'm going to do for it yet... Would like to get at least some sort of title by Summer though just so I can start gathering ideas for it. Thinking something Artificial Intelligence related though...

And is there? :p

I'm still delving into the introduction explaining models of Emotional Intelligence at the moment, hopefully shiould have it all wrapped up by the end of this week, then the method section shouldn't take too long, and then my results, discussions gonna be a homo though. Due in on the 2nd May.

Using an Emotional Intelligence scale devised by some lecturers at my Uni, the EISAQ (Emotional Intelligence Self Assessment Questionnaire) if you're interested and the STOMP (Short Test of Musical Preference).
Hopefully should be able to compare the dimensions of the Stomp to high and low emotional intelligence.

I guess a quick stab at a hypothesis would be those who indicated a preference to the 'Reflective & Complex' would score highly on the EISAQ!

Current Word Count: 5,100 est.
Final Word Count: 10,000
Hand in Date: 20 March 2008 (Extension due to an eye injury)
Subject: Geography
Title: Pro-environmental Behaviour and Mass-Media Representation: A Mixed-Model Approach.
Status: Currently finishing data analysis and interpretation. Moving onto discussion by Tuesday (hopefully). Plan on having it bound and printed early Thursday morning.

Oh yeah, I went to hand this in last week and the ladies in the office told me that they'd gotten the date wrong. I now have until the 7th April (two whole weeks!) to refine what I've done. :D

When they told me, I had been up for three days on the trot and was in shock for a good ten minutes. :p

Essentially I've finished, I'm just re-wording and manipulating things here and there!

All practical work done, report ~8000 words, logbook finished and @ ~10000.

Final report should be around 18-20k when done, first draft due in 6 days

when i did mine, i got an extension for the hell of it and with 3 days left, i started it. I finished in the 3 mornings before going to Uni, Approximately 5hrs, completing a 9000 word Dissertation on Whether PC games can be used as a training environment.

That's how a pro does it kids :D

If you're doing a non sensical degree maybe. But when you have to actually build something as opposed to just typing onto a keyboard, 3 days aint enough

;)

I wouldn't do a degree full stop, the amount of employers i've seen that laugh when they see:

'Graduate with excellent X skills'.

Relevant Work Experience:

-Bar work - Dealing with customers, taking orders and completing time critical tasks

"So, have you done this job before?"
"Err, no, but i can d..."
"Yeh, that's great,we'll be in touch"

:D

A light relief for those in the midst of dissertation hell

It may be old but was doin' the rounds when I was righting mnie. I had two, the 2nd one was fininshed at 14:50 the day before due date. I had finished it on my sister's Brother electronic typewriter (with two line LCD - b/w). I then had to drive for five hours to get back to college to hand it in. Made it, but because I had been up all nigh typing at around 30 lpm (yes letters per minute),

and so I nearly crashed the car near oxford, as I fell asleep at the wheel. - If only we had had e-mail then!

Anyways, good luck to all those doing their papers, and for the psychologists out there - in the old days of pure exams, the last question was

'Is this a question?'

To which the shortest was awarded the only A+, their essay is reproduced below in it's entirety:

'Yes. If this is an answer.'

Might be old, but we all thought it was cool nonetheless and No I wasn't, am not, nor never will manage to be a psychologist!:)

My GCSE Maths teacher spoke of a "friend" doing the same course. A question was "What is bravery?". The answer given was "This is.".

A+ that time as well I think. If it isn't Urban Legend of course! :p

Just hit the 8K mark on mine - quite proud! gonna have a break from it now and have some tea then work on some more bits this evening!
