The do I or don't I, go to work thread

Managed to beat the snow this morning and got to work, but it's not stopped snowing since. Contemplating heading home early to beat the inevitable rush-hour + snow = cars that don't move. M62 should be okay but it's getting to it from Beverley that's the issue.

I almost fell a dozen times trying to get to work. Got off the train and was walking up a hill then all of a sudden I started slipping sideways back down the hill, mental! I had to grab onto a rail like an old person to help me up the hill but I made into work on time (25 mins early) :)

Walked about 2 miles in today (as I always do), it did take about an extra 25 minutes, but I managed to not fall over :)

What I found amazing was there I was in my walking boots struggling on the icy bits, with my feet slipping every few metres and one or two guys in suits and shoes (I'm a postgrad research student so get to wear what I want) were just bowling along, never seeming to slip, yet their shoes didn't even have tread on them!!

Anyway, my answer is get to work if you possibly can :) Can always turn round and go home if it's really that bad.

Sorry but that's just bad advice. I've seen people literally get stuck having to abandon their car.

If it that's bad that it puts doubt into your head and the general consensus it to avoid travel...er avoid travel!

Fair enough :)

But I live in Manchester and not one of the people I know who travel in have had to turn back around home, even from as far out as Warrington, though it did take them half an hour longer. My flat mate came back after half an hour but he travels towards Knutsford, out in the country, so I can understand that being a problem.

I guess my comment was more designed with people who walk to work in mind. There were very few people even doing that this morning and tbh if I can walk 2 miles without falling over, anyone can (I'm not exactly light on my feet!)

I pretty much echo Spies sentiment really, though perhaps not worded quite so strongly :)

It's bloody awful out here (Cheshire), only way I got the car to move was using snow chains.

And that is "move" not drive as I'd be comfortable, let alone be comfortable around other morons without chains/snow tyres.

not going to work but i just drove to tesco up a hill in my fiesta and i was having to drive round bmws and vans all the way.

if you want to drive in snow buy a fiesta :p

Can work from home with remote apps but came in anyway.

Last year FD rang me up and told me not to bother, someone call forwarded my phone so it was all good.

Think we'll be sent home soon anyway, 3" of snow an entire bloody company stops working, pathetic. They're all just looking at the window watching people who live far away attempt to get out the car park while a few of us push!

We have 5 off today. We had one guy ring in saying he won't attempt to walk over his drive as there is too much ice.. Pathetic!

Jeez..

OK if you cant drive because you cant get out of your drive or things like that, you don't have winter tyres. But seems like so many people just have a look at the news saying 'OMG Horrid conditions' and just don’t go out :p

It seems weird that this happens every year at airports and other public transport. Why not just fix it? Surely the costs to do so will make up for the loss of people not travelling every year in the long run.

That's the problem though, this doesn't happen every year in this country. This kind of snow fall happens maybe once every 5 or 10 years?

Countries which experience this every year know how to deal with it, in the same way as very hot countries like Spain work totally different hours to us when things get too hot. On the whole our climate means that come Summer or Winter, things don't really need to change. Our councils may think they know what to do, but nobody is that experienced in reality, similarly most drivers don't have ANY clue how to drive in the white stuff, or indeed in even remotely slippy conditions, they have no concept of how their differential works. I'll bet there are even some out there who have no idea which end of their car is driven!

We live in a very mild climate mostly, so when things get a bit extreme (I'm not saying 4 inches of snow is THAT extreme, but for us its a very stark break from the norm), we arn't equipped to deal with it. Most of us don't have snow chains for our cars or spiked shoes to walk with.

I can fully see why, when this does happen, it causes chaos.

Having said that, I stick by my original post, people need to man up and get to work, or wherever they are meant to be, if they possibly can, not only go to work if its entirely easy to do so.

Problem is we don't have this weather regular enough which leads to the following problems:

1. The councils don't have enough grit.
2. People don't know how to drive on ice and snow - lack of experience
3. People don't have two sets of wheels like other countries and put snow tyres on in winter.

And I have just heard on the news that the gritters are now stuck on the motorway at Manchaster so if they can't move, cars will struggle.

Isn't today the most popular day for people pulling sickies?

That is beyond lame

Yesterday I was on my hands and knees due to sheet ice getting from the flat to the car (made it into work fine). This morning was the same and spent an hour clearing about 3-4" of snow off the car. Then it started snowing like mad again in Manc. At this point it was either get the chains out the boot or call it a day.

At this point I chose to call it a day as there is another 10-12cm due to come into Manc from 12 onwards today and I have 20miles down the M56 (when I get there). Could have used chains but for me they are for emergency use only (ie stuck and need to get home). None of the others made it in so I don't feel bad :)

I feel a lot better now in making the right call in not going in. :)
