The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim announced

Trust me, a lot of people don't want to know very much about the game at all before they play, so please don't post spoilers like that. We would be waiting forever if we wanted stuff like that to be fixed and some of it we love!

While true, should we be content with these flaws?

Should we not demand a higher level of polish then what we are being offered?

I would rather Skyrim took another year to be released and shipped with more polish, then be rushed out to make money.

I honestly have no issue with it, I see it as more of a quirk of the TES games really. There has to be a little bit of leeway for player actions, otherwise most of us would get killed by the guards in every town we entered for pilfering & abusing the locals ;)

Next thing you know, someone will post how to get Azura's Star, or some other rare artifact and claim:

'How is that a spoiler? How is it spoiling the story?'

:D

In TES, the Story is the most meaningless part of any game, and only makes up like 1% of the entire gameplay.

I've not known anybody who specifically waited 2 years for a Bethesda game tbh. Maybe a couple of months, but even then I don't know anybody who did that either.

Maybe that's just the people who go full on emo mode over the slightest thing?

New Vegas drove me nuts with its bugs (not Bethesda I know, but same deal) and I still completed that fine enough and then again a couple of months later with mods.

And I'm with the rest here, I'd rather not read anything that may be the smallest of spoilers. When the game comes out officially and it's our own choice not to have played it then it's fair game but not atm.

No one else makes these kind of games, there really isn't anything to compare it to.

Also when every one of Beths games has been bug ridden on release, you would be a little unrealistic to expect anything different.

I can take the AI freaking out, I just hope there isn't anything like save corruption or memory leaks.

No one offers a better quality game than Bethesda do with TES, so I have no idea what level of higher polish / quality others are expecting.

I dont see how people can complain about this game - What is there that is better? Nothing. (Unless you like MMOs, in which case go and find a nice fire, jump in it and burn).

I appreciate your opinion but i'm struggling to understand how bugs in a game can be classed as quirks. But each to there own.

As others have said these 'bugs' as you call them represent a minute fraction of the possibility a game like this allows, they're the wrong thing to focus on entirely, so I don't :)

Better isn't the word imo, too much leaning on opinion. Agree there isn't anything similar though.

I guess when you are the only people producing that type of game its hard to demand a higher level of quality.

But within the RPG genre we have had some games that far exceed this game already.

For example Witcher 2, while you don't get the level of freedom Skyrim offers, that game is on a different level compared to Skyrim. Witcher 2 was a masterpiece.

It seems that Bethesda can keep pumping out exactly the same game over 10 years and people will keep buying them and granting them game of the year. Without demanding anything new.

We keep falling for the same line "Its a new engine" but clearly multiple times its been shown that there engine hasn't really changed since Morrowind. And the problem there is technology has vastly advanced since Morrowind and it seems like Skyrim is an old man with a face lift.

But people will keep buying it, i have no idea why. I guess its like washing machines. Bethesda are like Hotpoint/Indesit and CDProjeckt are like Miele.

It really isn't the same game though, is it? that's just hyperbole. Its a totally new environment, new npcs, quests, side stories. Dungeons aren't copy and paste and actually have bosses and rewards, magic is actually a viable playstyle, leveling system horribleness is gone, enemy scaling is notably improved.

I'm not going into specifics about the engine, I'm not a game dev so I cant really offer anything except armchair punditry. The combat isn't as impactful as I would have liked but the first person finishers look awesome (3rd are horrible, mod out asap) and the whole dual wielding system looks pretty neat.

Regarding The Witcher 2 (I have 62 hours played according to Steam) it was a stunning game, and possibly my GoTY atm, but its a totally different experience - comparatively linear, no vastly different playstyles, the combat had a layer of jank but I managed just fine. Much shorter too (This is an assumption. My first playthrough took 24 hours, completionist run took around 23, skipped nothing.)

Coming from the person who is blindly in love with The Old Republic - your posts never cease to entertain me :)

Thats different. SWTOR is a new game, with a "new" engine and a completely different genre, with fierce competition.

Elder Scrolls is 10 years plus into its life time and the overall style and story hasn't changed since Morrowind.

Stop with the aggressive attitude.

Witcher 2 is absolutely nothing compared to TES lol. Its like 10% as good as a TES game. Theres no open world, everything is level / cell based similar to Neverwinter nights - such a horrible way to make an RPG world.

I assume thats what Latex said anyway, his posts be hidden (Only until I've played the game).
