I will play the game as it comes naturally to me, imo that is the beauty of TES games. For me it just didn't feel natural to go off doing side quests when you have something pretty important in the main quest to do.

I get the main quest out of the way and then explore everything! The plot is never as bad as it is made out to be anyway.
There were some great Oblivion quest mods as well which had other main quests such as The Lost Spires, the one that extends the Mage's Guild plot line and Kvatch Rebuilt. (there was another brilliant one that i can't remember the name of as well, but The Lost Spires was excellent.
