The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim announced

If your game is stuttering at all even slightly anywhere, or you load a new area and you get major fps drop then it is the vram, you havent got enough.

i get stutter quite often. its mostly a random occurrence.

i have 3gb vram and the most ive seen been used is 2.3 gb.

Maybe its the hard drive as well then, as it loads new thing because I have an SSD, plus the latest nvidia drivers fixed some of the stuttering, I get no stuttering at all now.

Wrong. The only stuttering you'd get from vanilla graphics is HDD strain and the CPU throttle that the GameBryo Engine does. No real way to get rid of the HDD strain except get an SSD, which is pathetic as games that load in a lot more can do it without stuttering. The CPU throttle is an issue in the engine coding that effects some processors, not necessarily by model, just by individual, keep an eye on your task manager and the CPU panel and check it's activity while playing, if it's the cause of your stuttering then you'll see multiple instances of it dropping below 10% activity.

Absolutely loving the game. Running a few simple mods including the better weather effects (name?), Lanterns of Skyrim and the fuller trees and more birds etc. Fairly superficial and hasn't affected my game.

If I were to get the official HD textures pack on my spec below do you think I'd get significant slowdown? I'm aware my card is beginning to age now. Waiting for 8000 series really.

If I do get a bad affect is it easy to uninstall?

Cheers :)

Screw the official HD textures, they are incredibly ugly and have little to no visual upgrade at a fair fps hit (2k resolution afterall). I'd recommend getting 2K textures LITE (same resolution as the HD texture pack) which are infinitely better designed than vanilla. Your 5850 though isn't going to cope with 2k resolution textures without some stuttering (my 6850 can't) so you'll have to grab a program called Textures Optimiser at the Skyrim Nexus, just compress all textures in the Skyrim/Data folder to <1024 from 2048 and they'll look amazing still. Try and grab these:

2k Textures - download LITE, install FIRST
Bump maps - gives textures a fuller, tessellated look, an absolute must have, install whenever, but i'd recommend installing 2nd to last
Flora Overhaul - even the grass in this is ugly as hell, but it's still a million times better than vanilla, install whenever
Interior Lighting - another must have, makes interiors look amazing, no fps hit, install whenever
Blood Textures - any res you want, shouldn't effect fps, a must have, install whenever
aMidianBorn's armor retextures, another mod that you won't be able to play without after experiencing, install whenever
New rock textures - INSTALL LAST

Now after installing all of those, you will get a pretty big performance impact, that's why you run this:

Textures Optimizer - compress all textures to 1024 using this

then drop shadows to medium or low (high-ultra have extreme fps impact on most cards) and everything else to whatever you want, should be stutter free unless its a CPU/HDD issue.

Thanks for the responses peeps :)

Awesome! I'll certainly give these a try.

Lucky for me I've already been introduced to the basics of Nexus for the SkyUI mod so I'm sure I should be able to figure out the rest.

Thanks for all the helpful links :)

I'll see what my machine can cope with. I have a feeling that this will be a game (like MTW2 & Oblivion before it) to re-visit once I have a new card in the future!

Just started playing Skyrim a few weeks ago. Last TES game I played was Arena :o

Really loving it though. Started off with vanilla, then downloaded "just a few" mods, mostly on the graphical front. Made the mistake of looking at the game play enhancing ones ...now I have mods coming out of my wazoo!

Game runs perfectly on my dual 6970's with the HD2K textures and a boat load of other enhancements, save for one curious issue. When indoors, be it dungeon or house, I get some really choppy performance at random spots, usually when you wouldn't expect it, like looking at a wall or a bowl of fruit - it's always when I am right up close to something static (combat is fine) ...stranger still, fps is showing as hovering around 60 the whole time this is happening so I am guessing it's more than likely a crossfire issue or some weird timing/cpu issue.

I started a new game today, as I am not really fancying anything else atm(and I feel like crap today:(). I realised that even though I have played the game to death, I have never even tried Heavy Armour or 2handed, so I will give those a go....though I might try a mix of heavy and light, I don't know how viable it is.

I have started using TK dodge, and it is excellent. Also the update to SKYUI is great. Nice implementation of the Mod Configuration Menu.

Just started this great game again and wanted something that looked great and ran well on my 6850, duel core at 3.3 ghz and 4 gig of ram. After trying out a few ENB to try out what worked best on my system with just vanilla skyrim and the hi rez texture pack that came with it i liked the Skyburial ENB best, it looked great and no performance hit :)
Cannot play game without Skyui and Categoried Favorites Menu mods, added a few more must have mods and now the game looks great and runs realy well :)

A few screenshots in spoiler tags for you :)

Good to see that the author of Climates of Tamriel fixed the neon grass bug in the 'final' version.

Yup. Back to Realistic Lighting WC.

I'm not sure if I should be putting any points into Magicka, not a mage but have stamina and health way over 200, (around level 20). Is there room for magicka for an archer, warrior, sneaky type or would you just keep maxing health and stamina?

This sound's quite silly but...I'm running skyrim on a GTX 550 Ti, the fans go wild with this game. Am I doing any long term damage by running my system like this? The system is well ventilated and I keep an eye on it with MSI Afterburner and it all seem's to be okay but I don't want to end up frying my system (bit paranoid :p)

I'm playing a similar character. Just started adding to magicka as I fancied a bit of a change. Just another option to stop the combat getting stale really, with some necromancy thrown in for laughs.
I had found I knew a ton of spells I never used, so figured I'd give em a go haha.

Mainly though; If you're still enjoying the combat/general game as you are I wouldn't bother.

I'm going to try 2 more characters in the future, one as a Berzerker type and a full on Mage.

Dragonborn on February 5th then

PC and PS3 fans, prepare to cast off. Next month, you will travel to Solstheim, home of Skyrim’s latest add-on, Dragonborn. PS3 fans can expect an expanded itinerary – with stops at Fort Dawnguard and Castle Volkihar – before heading back to the home of your dreams. Details below:
PC: On Tuesday, February 5th, Dragonborn will be available on Steam, including the English, French, Italian, Spanish and German versions of the content.
PlayStation 3: Dragonborn will be the first add-on arriving on PSN in February. Hearthfire will release next, followed by Dawnguard, and all three should be out in February. The 1.8 update will also release, just prior to Dragonborn. We’ll keep you posted as release dates get finalized both on our end and with Sony for each and its various languages. Last but not least, each one will be 50% off during their launch week on PSN.
Over the last year, it’s been a treat for us to work on new content for Skyrim, and we’re excited that it will soon be available for everyone to explore. Thanks for all your support and sharing your adventures with us.

Skyrim was the biggest game release for me on the 11.11.11. When Lydia got killed, and her body lay there. Until I loaded up a few saves later - gone. Then I knew - in a few simple hours of playing that Skyrim was as useless as Oblivion.
Loved Fallout 3 - hope yet.

Suppose i'll just see how I get on then :).
I tried using a bit of magic to heal with but it felt so fiddly having to change weapons to the magic.. I'm sure in Oblivion you had a separate hotkey for a spell so you could heal without having to change weapons?

Could anyone help me with a tiny problem? On the Proving Honor quest its in the completed section yet 'return to jorrvaskr' still has an uncompleted icon next to it.. I'm sure I did it though, went to the back of jorrvaskr and got initiated, its just annoying it showing as incomplete..

I am playing atm and I have just has something different happen and I wonder if anyone can tell my why/what happens in this bit?...I will put it in spoilers, though I doubt anyone would care tbh.

I am replaying atm, doing the main quest and I was doing the Thalmor Embassy quest for about the 4th time. Basically every time I have done it before, there has been 4-5 people in the party bit, where you have to cause a distraction...of the top of my head there has been me, Erikur, the Thalmor guys and Maven Blackbriar. Now on this playthrough whilst doing this mission I found that there were about 15 people there including the Jarls of Soliyude, Whiterun, Falkreath and Morthal. Also Proventus something, Vitoria Vicci and some other characters from other parts of the game.

This really took me by surprise as it has been different all the other times I have done it. Does it play differently based on some factors I am not aware of, or did I have a bug or something?
