The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim announced

So oblivions system but without major or minor skills just all major.

great....

in other words we replaced immortal npcs with their never ending extended families, because actually giving you consequences for your actions would confuse the console darlings.

Indeed... some things sound good, but theres also a fair bit of dumbing the game down for the gamers who struggle with long words like 'consequences'. Gotta say the levelling system sounds dodgy. I only hope it can be converted to an EXP mod, preferably using major/minor/specialisations too.

What is the levelling system in Fallout 3, having never played it? Do the monsters level up with you the same as in Oblivion? So all areas are accessible from the beginning?

Somewhere in between Morrowind's & Oblivion's, the world wouldn't completely level with you level for level and there was more fixed spawns so you could wander into some areas that would kick your ass. But like in MW as you did level up there would be more chance in running into higher level creatures like mutant overlords instead of regular mutants like in MW outside you wouldn't run into ogrims & golden saints when you were low leveled but you may still run into a quest/cave with them in it.

I'd say it was a more levelled scaled than MW but not overly, you wouldn't run into bandits with top laser guns like those glass/ebony wielding highway men in OB. :p

None of this surprises me (the dumbing down). Hence why I never got excited about this. Beth are full steam ahead for the kiddie crowd these days. Only slight exception was Fallout3/ F:NV to an extent, at least the writing and leveling was good in the latter. As someone said above, a kind of in-between. Not the rubbish level scaling of Oblivion which looks like it's returning for Skyrim....sigh

Can't wait for this - sounds more simplifiedn than Morrowind and Oblivion - a lot of people will complain, but the same happened with ME2 and that was a huge success. Can't wait for this!

Someone mentioned Doom 4, anyone have more information on that?

on topic, it's sad to see The Elder Scrolls series turning into a dumbed-down, simpletons, console game. The days of Daggerfall and Morrowind are gone :(

I thought they were all more or less the same. Only difference being Fallout 3 used EXP for leveling while TES stuck to its god awful skill leveling system with its completely broken mechanics. All games had areas with static spawns that didn't change regardless of your level though as i recall, Morrowind had considerably more and Fallout 3 only really had the 2 blatantly obvious areas (Yao Guai Caves and Deathclaw Sanctuary) and Old Olney. Don't ever remember running into common bandits or highway men wielding gear far too strong for you unless it was scripted.

The change to the leveling system just sounds like shear stubbornness on there part tbh. I am glad the new system does at least stop the problem where if you were to go pure mage the likelihood is you'd only have 1 or 2 mage skills as majors and some random crap so you could control your levelling. Chances are it'll be more balanced if it uses all your skills so you don't have to screw around trying to get 5x mulitpliers to avoid being gimped. Also sounds like massive dumbing down though not requiring you to actually think about your character build... as said really from the whole 'for those of you who think your character should be the master of all trades and don't really want to play a certain character'.

I think you played it wrong ;) I sunk 30+ hours doing the assassin and thief guild missions before visiting a single portal tower. The main quest did suck though, i'll grant you that.

I'm 43 hours into Oblivion and I haven't touched the main quest. First time round, I found the Oblivion gates all very samey and boring. MW's main quest was so much better.

Problem with the Oblivion Gates was that there were only a set number of them (was it about 7 or something?) and half of them were a sort of 'puzzle' to get to the end, requiring you to go up and activate something then go back to somewhere while the other half were essentially linear just extremely long. They needed to be more randomly randomly generated.

The next Elder Scrolls game, Skyrim, will be making some big changes to the way the series handles things like combat and levelling-up.

Firstly, combat: according to a piece in the latest issue of Game Informer, you can now dual-wield weapons in the game. To many it will sound like a cheap take on a Halo/Modern Warfare staple, but where in those shooters it's a part-time indulgence, in Skyrim it forms the cornerstone of your approach to the game, as you can allocate which weapon or tool goes in which hand.

So, for example, you can put a sword in one hand and a dagger in the other. Or two daggers. Or a staff and a shield. Or a shield and a mace. For magic users, a different spell can be cast from each hand, or for a multiplying effect, the same spell can be thrown from both hands.

Another change to the way Skyrim plays compared to its predecessor, Oblivion, is in how you gain new powers and abilities. This game does entirely away with the concept of class creation, Bethesda's thinking being it's a bit naff asking people to predict how they're going to play a game when they haven't played it yet.

Replacing this, then, is an organic system of attribute growth based on use: the more you do something, the better you get at it. While this has long been a staple of RPG games, even dating back to the Quest for Glory series, but in Skyrim it's not just complementing a class structure, it's replacing it. So you won't be cast in stone as a mage if you use lots of magic, you'll just be some adventurer with a higher magic number in their stats.

You level up according to how you progress your most-used skills. "Raising one skill from 34 to 35 is going to level you faster than raising one from 11 to 12", Bethesda's Todd Howard tells Game Informer. If you stick to what you like/do best, you'll level up quickly. Conversely, if you want to take things slowly, you can raise all or most of your skills, as not focusing on one or two in particular will mean a slower rise through the levels.

One wildly unpopular aspect of Oblivion was the fact basic enemies levelled up alongside you, meaning even the most powerful warriors could sometimes be undone by sewer rats or angry crabs. In Skyrim, though, your opponent's levelling is more like that found in Fallout 3.

Continuing Bethesda's work with Fallout 3, each new level you gain in Skyrim will also give you a perk, which you can apply to give you added bonuses relative to how you want to play the game.

The levelling sounds like an interesting experiment, one I like the sounds of since I always hate choosing an "archetype" in a game before I know how I'm going to play it. The combat also sounds like a welcome piece of customisation for the series, but how well they actually work in the game, we'll just have to wait until we get some time with it!

After reading this i can not wait!!!!!!!!
