Have they really not got anyone vaguely competent with the bat that they can replace Roy with?

So now Root once again is in effectively as an opener, because Roy still hasn't learned that you leave wide balls alone early on in a test innings. And immediately gets out because, like Roy, he isn't an opening batsman. It was a good ball, which won't matter at all because everyone will simply say...

Root rubbish. :(

...rather than focus on the actual problem of not having openers who can stick around for any length of time.

Yikes, and as I type this Denly has nearly been trapped lbw. Good review.

I dont understand the difference between test batting and ODI batting. When England regularly smash 300 in one dayers but get 150 in test matches.......why not play the same....

Ball moves more, pitches are generally more interesting, no fielding restrictions so you can't launch it to the boundary aerially, bowlers generally bowl a proper line and length to get you out driving rather than just bowling yorkers/bouncers/wide of off stump to restrict runs.

Edit: Also, time - there's not much point in a test in smashing 300 in half a day. It gives the other side plenty of time to dig in and outscore you at any rate they fancy, which is theoretically lower risk. A big part of Test batting is going at an appropriate rate for a 5 day match.
