The England Cricket Thread

Fair points are fair.

I think at 5 would be wrong but if the order was easy they would have sorted it out by now.

Part of me would like to see Stokes at 3, for the fun of it more than anything. He could quickly add on some pressure or steady the ship and have more batsmen to hang around with him.

Won't happen though.

The last thing we should be doing is shuffling players around that are actually performing. Stokes has a solid defensive technique but opening and number 3 in a Test side are roles for specialists, which is why our current selection policy is failing big time.

It was more a tongue in cheek thing than anything. :)

Would be nice to find those specialists though.

You wouldn’t believe it by his posts but he is an Aussie! Wins and loses like a typical Aussie as well!

Mate, I'm Australian and I am definitely not supporting England in this game. :p

I just give them credit for a solid batting display.

Translation: wins more often than England; loses less often than England. :p

No translation needed as you were. McGrath instead of acknowledging the great inning he focused on technology  Bad winners and bad losers. although the current squad seem to be little different clapping stokes off. If I was a cynical person I’d say it’s been forced on them to help improve the image of Australian cricket .......

Anderson ruled out of the rest of the Ashes, big shame but possibly good as slightly less disruption to the team and may force changes to the batting up the order with Woakes still in there.

Terrible news IMO. Jimmy's still the best bowler we have.

Jimmy being out doesn't address any issues with Woakes and the batting. Two separate scenarios

However it sounds like they're now going to have Denly open and put Roy in at 4. God this team is a mess.

Denly was originally brought in to either open or bat at 3, it made literally no sense to have him at 4 and expose one of our best hitters of the ball to the brand new ball.

Denly & Burns is an opening partnership I have reasonable confidence in, they might not score a huge amount against this good Australia attack but both are mentally strong and willing to hang around to see off the new ball. If they can do that then Root, Roy, Stokes, Bairstow, Buttler and Woakes batting against a used ball could be very fun.

Yip Denly confirmed as opener and Roy dropping down to 4.

Worth a shot.

It really couldn't be much worse than it is at the moment.

Currently I get amazed if Roy lasts out the first over, even if he hasn't faced a ball.

I'd be more inclined to move Jos up to 4 and stick Roy down at 6/7. I'm not sure that Roy has the brains to bat at 4, given that he'll likely still be at the crease within the first 15 overs.

Other than Roy, who benefits from this? He doesn't deserve to be there.

-The captain wants to bat at #4. THE CAPTAIN. He should be allowed to bat where he likes. Instead, he's at #3

- We have a guy who's spent his FC career at #5-6. He's been brought in to open, failed and now is at #4

- We have a guy who's spent a large part of his career at #3-4 and has now been asked to open to shield failing opener who is now at #4

Weak from the selectors who are treating all 3 players disgracefully, alongside the players (Sibley, Pope) who should be in the squad in the first place

- Root chose to bat at 3. He called Denly before the first Test and asked him to bat at 4 so Root could go in at 3. I don't like him batting there but it was his choice.

- Yes decision to open with Roy in Tests was poor and now they're rectifying while keeping one of the best batsmen in the country in our team.. I don't see a problem.

- Denly has opened many times, even his Cricinfo profile lists him as an opener. He's opened for England in both ODI's and Tests. It makes more sense for him to open in Tests than it does to open with Roy.

In terms of the others, Pope is used to batting in middle order. Either you keep Root at 3 to bring Pope in to 4 or you bring Pope in at 6 although that doesn't necessarily solve any problems right now. As for Sibley, I initially wanted him in to open and Roy in the middle order instead of Denly however Roy's WC performances and Denly's performance in the last test means I'd want to give both another go.

Bayliss and the selectors have pushed him multiple times to go there, despite him stating he prefers it at #4.

Well not sure we'll be seeing much cricket today. I'm not too far from the ground and it's pouring down. Had a look at the weather and we might see some respite early afternoon before late afternoon rain appears.

It's frustrating that it's been quite a wet summer. They should have started the ashes much earlier.

Full-scale storm on this side of the Irish Sea. And the winds blowing in your direction.
