Root has to go as captain. I’m not sure what Silverwood has done with the team in his first weeks and months on the job, but at the moment it looks an awfully lot like selecting the same players and instructing them to play the same way.

It was never truly likely to happen, was it?! Only a freak of an innings by Ben Stokes combined with a lot of luck has seen England chase down any reasonable total in the 4th innings for years.

It could have happened. They had plenty of time to grind it out.

England successfully chased a target of 359 in the 4th innings of the 3rd Ashes Test in August this year. The biggest hitters were Root (77), Denly (50) and Stokes (135). Admittedly, Australia is a much weaker side than South Africa.
