My non cricket playing neighbour was trying to tell me that the batsmen should 'just get out the way and leave the short balls, why do they let themselves get hit?'

I challenged him to try a net session with the ball coming at him at 90mph and see how easy getting out the way is.

It's easier than trying to hook them, which is what most of our batsmen do

True.

As an aside, i believe 'reaction times' are more to do with mental than physical ability. Very simplistically, once we've decided what to do, most of us are fairly even when it comes to then firing the electricity and muscles moving.

Where elite sports people differ is that they take in and process information so much more quickly, they are firing off instructions while we mortals are still going 'Crap, that might hurt.'
