The England Cricket Thread

A comment from the BBC Sport Cricket commentary thread, absolutely spot on.

Cricket must look absolutely ridiculous to those looking in. Taking teams off before 90 overs are bowled in good weather, not starting early on the good days when you always lose time later, and of course they must have a full lunch.

Yep. I was talking to my partner about this last night. They know its going to rain a lot but the only even extend sessions or change things when they are in arrears. They are never proactive and say "we aren't going to get more than 2/3 of a days cricket over the next 2 days so perhaps we should extend the days when we do have good weather.

The weather has ruined what could have been a classic ashes series which went down to the final match.

I may give up on test cricket after this debacle. A great series is set to be ruined by idiotic weather rules, forcing a draw when England would otherwise win easily and turning the finale into a damp squib of a game instead of a winner-takes all spectacle.

Am I missing something or is not the simplest solution to make the results of the first innings stand if the second innings can't be completed?
Yes, a draw would obviously still be possible if both the first innings couldn't be completed (or runs were drawn) but it's arguable that such little play should genuinely be a draw. Having the first innings provide a type of "provisional" result, should the second not be completed would not only massively reduce the number of draws due to weather but also add an interesting dimension to the game as the first innings would become even more important.

Totally, it's the entertainment business and cricket remains firmly stuck in its ways.

Today Lunch and Tea should just be cancelled cos you know they'll get on like 2:30 then **** off for 20 minutes for tea! There is supposed to be 90 overs bowled in a day and they should play every minute the conditions are playable until it's too dark to play.

Cue England and the press trying to "big up" the final test as an opportunity to square the series when, in reality, no one will care.

This debacle is everything that's wrong with test cricket and will turn off seasoned viewers, let alone attract new ones.
With The Hundred starting again next week, I fear many prospective new fans will feel that one-day formats are not only better entertainment but simply 'fairer'.

In my mind it’s 2-2. It won’t be in the record books but for me that is the real result.

Its a total farce that it’s come down to this

GG.

Can't see us winning the Ashes back down under, the gap between the two sides in Australian conditions is much bigger then it is in English conditions. Maybe if we both Archer and Wood both available and fit we could run them close but that's a big if.

Seems a bit bonkers this hasn't been called off yet, even if the clouds parted and the rain stopped this second it would take ages to clear the standing water!

Even then if they got on at 7pm there is no chance of a result so why bother messing everyone about?!
