The England Cricket Thread

I'm going to say it, England have a very good chance of winning here. I don't see a better opportunity to make it 1-1. If they don't win from here, they might as well pack their bags.

If Root hangs about, we're good. Halfway there, new ball seen off, Aussie reviews left up. Malan going not ideal, both Woakes is good enough to partner him

A brilliant day of cricket.

For England to be in with any chance Root will have to bag a century I feel.

Defining moment after four big doubles, ten absolute worldy slip catches, and bowling Smith for a golden pair in the last two matches?

Two matches is a long time ago. Right now his Ashes performance is critical:

Cook
1st Test, 1st innings: 2, c Handscomb b Starc
1st Test, 2nd innings: 7, c Starc b Hazlewood

2nd Test, 1st innings: 37, c Smith b Lyon
2nd Test, 2nd innings: 16, lbw b Lyon

Total: 62 off four innings. Took two catches.

Smith
1st Test, 1st innings: 141, n/o
1st Test, 2nd innings: did not bat

2nd Test, 1st innings: 40, b Overton
2nd Test, 2nd innings: 6, lbw b Woakes

Total: 187 off three innings. Took five catches.

What am I missing here?

Only the fact that his post was blindingly obviously completely tongue-in-cheek

Can anyone smell that? You know that familar smell of 5-... Yeah, I think this England team is good enough to replicate that feat.

No substance whatsoever in the batting. The match was there to be won, but they couldn't deliver when it mattered. I mean, how can they deliver when 3 out of the top 6 average a combined 26!!!!! You've got rubbish county players who average poorly in FC cricket and expect them to perform on the big stage. It's not going to happen. The ECB and the selection people are totally to blame along with the captain and coach if they think that they're going to build a team around a top 6 that averages so poorly.

Not only that but you've got the "legendary" Cook doing nothing to help his team. But that's ok though, because he scored runs against WI last summer so he's booked his position regardless. Not realising that runs scored now is what matters, when the series is alive. Not when it's gone.

England cricket is in big trouble for the foreseeable future.

This won't affect the Ashes, but it's rather awkward nonetheless:

England's Ashes campaign has been rocked by another alcohol-related incident, with Ben Duckett stood down from a tour match in Perth.

Duckett is not part of England's Test squad but he was among a handful of England A players set to feature in the two-day fixture against a Cricket Australia XI alongside Moeen Ali, which began on Saturday.

But the batsman, who has played four Tests and three one-day internationals, was out drinking on Thursday night. The 23-year-old has been suspended pending investigation and faces a disciplinary hearing.

It is understood the episode occurred at a Perth bar between Thursday night and Friday morning. Police were not involved.

Bayliss is taking it pretty seriously:

Trevor Bayliss has threatened to drop players from the England team after another late-night incident in Perth which saw Ben Duckett pour a drink over James Anderson, the Test vice-captain.

While Bayliss, the England coach, described the incident as "fairly trivial" in itself, it comes at a time when the team has been dogged by alcohol-related controversy and as they are trying to ensure all focus remains on retaining the Ashes.

As a consequence, a furious Bayliss has described the incident as "just not acceptable" and admitted he "might review who is in the team".

Bayliss should begin by dropping batsmen that can't score and bring players who have proven statistics. No. Not Ballance. He's had enough chances. But you get the gist.

I still can't get over what they did to KP. He was my favourite player by a country mile and could have easily given the Aussies a headache or two like he has done before.

England wins the toss and chooses to bat. Australia has swapped Handscomb for Mitch Marsh, a controversial decision that could easily backfire.

Game on!

Another calamity from Cook. His bat didn’t even cross the line of the ball, he just dabbed at thin air. He’s a has been. He won’t be getting any double hundreds in this series. Think he should bow out gracefully after this series.
