This video gives reason enough why we would be better off regarding immigration troubles if we stayed in the EU.

Looking at the treaty itself it looks like either party could terminate at any time, whether or not we are in the EU.

ARTICLE 16
This Agreement is concluded for an unlimited duration, and each of the Parties may terminate it at any time by written notification addressed through diplomatic channels to the other Party. The termination shall come into effect two months after the date of this notification.

edit: oops, not sure that's the correct treaty haha
edit 3: The Le Touquet treaty, seems to me, to only be about carrying arms rather than the border itself?

Granted it's unlikely if we remain, but no guarantee. The video mentions parties in France who would like to see an end to the agreement but do we know how many and how popular the opinion is? If previous reports of troubles around Calais which are claimed to be caused by people at the camp are true, is there a possibility that public opinion in Calais could force the issue no matter what we decide?

The other question is would France really do this if we left the EU, as tempting as it would be for them. Especially given the treaty is outside the EU (I may be wrong there). Politically, while negotiating trade agreements, it may not be wise.

I'm currently back on the fence after previously being an outer, after watching the brexit wargames video again which raises many valid points.

Edit 2: bah yep, here is the full treaty doc, will read in a bit https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/273137/2366.pdf

Edit 4: I've been reading through the above document, and I can't seem to find any details on terminating the agreement. Has anyone found a newer version which may detail termination? The closest I can find to terminating the agreement is: Article 48 - Either government may at any time request consultations with a view to revising the provisions of this Protocol in order to adapt it to new circumstances or needs.

The part which annoys me is when stupid people harp on about how the UK is a big economy and so the EU needs us and any barriers to trade would be detrimental to both sides, as though that's the end of it... and that therefore meaning we'll be able to negotiate free trade without having to deal with free movement of people. That's oversimplifying to an idiotic extent.

It seems obvious to me that they won't just consider the financial impact of tariffs, etc, on rEU and the UK, but instead will consider things such as what'd happen if the UK was granted access to all the parts of the market we wanted, without having to deal with free movement of people. If the EU allowed the UK to have a super sweet deal, what would eg. the French and German people and politicians think? Surely they'd be like, 'LOL WUT? Why should we stay part of the EU when we can follow the UK out and still keep all the benefits?'. Basically if they give us a super sweet deal it could lead to the collapse of the EU... so it wouldn't just be out of spite, it'd be having a less than ideal arrangement from an economic perspective because the political implications would have to be factored in.

Channel Islands and Isle of Man have free movement of goods but not people. Switzerland recently too.
