Switzerland have decided it's a good idea to unilaterally breach their agreement with the EU. We'll have to see what happens to them. Presumably the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man have weird residency arrangements because of a limited supply of housing, with the option of commuting not being realistic, and so their population has to be managed in a way which makes free movement impossible?

They've also withdrawn thier bid for membership.

So what happens if that comes to fruition and the guillotine clause is activated and the other bilateral agreements are dissolved?

The seven being,

1. Free movement of people
2. Air traffic
3. Road traffic
4. Agriculture
5. Technical trade barriers
6. Public procurement
7. Science

The exact same as the UK. It all gets renegotiated. Despite what the EU think anything and everything can be negotiated. Switzerland wanting out only strengthens the UKs case. The USA negotiated the TTIP.

If they choose to, the Swiss have a strong negotiating position apparently. Their central position between the industrial nations means a very significant amounts of road freight passes through Switzerland. The EU would cause themselves a lot of economic grief playing hardball with Switzerland.

How does it strengthen the UK's case? The fact the EU are refusing to negotiate the free movement of people shows they're very reluctant to give (even limited) free market access if free movement of people isn't part of the deal.

You brought Switzerland into this by using them as an example of a country who gets access to the free market - well, you said free movement of goods - without having to accept free movement of people. But that's not the case. Their agreement includes free movement of people, where if they scrap that their entire agreement dissolves... and the EU aren't willing to negotiate, as it stands. It's an awful example.

It is a perfect example because the EU put up a front of no negotiation but they will be forced to. Absolutely anything can be negotiated. Anyone who claims otherwise are not very good at negotiating. TTIP is the obvious agreement to arrange.

A more truthful headline... :p

I'll be voting to stay in the EU. I seriously don't see how the UK can compete on the global stage without Europe backing us up. (Un)fortunately the empire is no more and the days when the UK could stand on its own are long gone.

I fear that if we leave the EU the UK will just get into bed with the USA and become even more of a lapdog for them than we already are. At least in the EU the UK has the political and economic might behind them to stand up to the USA.

I can't imagine anything worse than closer ties with the USA. Could you imagine what it would be like if Donald Trump was president?! I shudder to think.

How have you come to that conclusion?

Whether you like it or not. The UK is part of two major trading blocks. The European Union and the Commonwealth.

The European Union is the largest economic area in the world. Larger than both the USA and China. Leaving the largest economic area in the world for economic reasons (which is what most of the out vote seem to quote) seems somewhat strange and illogical to me. Countries all over the world would do almost anything to join the European Union. Only the UK for some strange reason wants out.

Since 1960 the UK has floated between being the 4th, 5th and 6th biggest economy and there seems to be no correlation between us being in the EU or not. For example in 1960, 13 years before we joined the 'EEC', we were 4th just like we were in 2005 when we were in the EU. Likewise we were 6th in 1970 just before we joined the EEC, but then 6th again in 2010 in the EU.

If it were the case that before joining the EU we were floating between 10th and 12th but then went up to 3rd-5th after being in I'd see your point but that isn't the case.

Probably because most countries would be subsidised by being in the EU where as we subsidise them.

True.

£33,000,000 per day net contribution to EU for our membership. They do not want to lose the pie because is too big.

------------------------------------------------------------------

And a history lesson, why EU is doomed, regardless if we decide to leave or stay....

The Western Roman Empire collapsed due to migration from the other side of Danube & Rhine in 385/387 and 405/407. And the migration occurred because the Huns pushed everyone else westwards.

Look at today. One million Syrian migrants, are enough to make the 580 million citizens EU to close it's borders, most countries raising walls, and threatening their neighbours. (even Romania for heaven sake)
Is this the EU we want to be members of? Which WE subsidize on top.

The vote will be rigged, there's no way the corporations who control our government will let us leave the EU.

European Commission proposes adding Georgia to list of countries whose citizens can travel without a visa to the Schengen area.

Firstly, shouldn't the EC be more concerned with resolving the current Schengen crisis like you know, making sure it doesn't collapse, before inviting other countries to take part in it? Secondly, as much as I admire the Georgian people for their resistance to Russia, I can't help feeling that closer EU integration with Georgia isn't really going go down well in Moscow. Does the EU even have a plan to manage Putin? Or are they just going to pretend it doesn't exist and that they don't have concerns with EU expansion? What a crazy decision - get us out of the EU now I say.

Since when is Visa free travel 'Closer European integration'?

Here is a selection of some of the other countries in the world that enjoy Visa free (Remember, Visa free is not the same as unrestricted) entry to Schengen:

United States
Canada
United Arab Emirates
Australia
New Zealand
Brazil
Chile
Argentina
Mexico
Malaysia
Honduras
Columbia

Most of South America actually, so I won't type them all out.

etc etc

Honestly scorza, you are astounding at times.

I'm not opposed to the concept of visa-free travel, just adding another country to the list now when surely there are more pressing Schengen concerns for the EC to consider. Yes, in Georgia's case (their government and people have expressed a strong desire to join the EU), visa-free travel is closer integration with the EU. Unfortunately we can't ignore Russia, whose armed forces control a region of Georgia, so I'd think it was prudent not to ignore geo-politics while discussing EU relations with Georgia.
