The Evil Within

Need someone to confirm whether the patch actually now makes the game worthy of a purchase!
Patch makes 60FPS possible & its much smoother but broke the flawless widescreen fix for 21:9.

Right now the game is full screen pillarboxed 16:9 aspect ratio for me (it was perfect with flawless widescreen before the patch broke it  ).

Game is still worth buying if you like action survival horror games it has issues but I have still put over 40 hours in & I am not a patient man either ;)

Think RE4/Silent Hill2,3,4,5 its a mixture of those dated in places but also has some decent moments. Feels more like a PS2 era survival horror title on PC with modern gfx they are quite nice in places.

I had been using the mods available to fix the FoV and remove borders, luckily I only had two chapters left after the patch last night.

I'm glad I've finished it, now I can move on to the next game and forget all about this. Sadly I doubt I'll be revisiting it again.

Demo Available on Steam

going to give it a shot. the demo consists of the first 3 chapters.. i hear chapter 2 and 3 are the worst bit of the game, may not be the best showcase of the game then!

Please can 21:9 users post here to let Bethesda know we want support. When/if 21:9 gets fixed everytime they release their 3 DLC packs it will be broken again if its not native ingame support from Tango Gameworks. No way is Hayden going to fix this another 4 times when it takes him hours to get all the memory addresses for every time the aspect ratio changes ingame thats unrealistic to expect.

The developers & publisher need to fix this ASAP when Wolfenstein TNO uses the same game engine & same publisher!

I tried out the demo just now. Performance actually seems really good even though the fps hovers around the 50-52 mark at 3440x1440. There is mouise lag in the menus but ingame even with vsynch I felt no mouse lag. Enabling 60fps forces you to use Vsync though as it's a "60fps Vsync" option only. At 3440x1440 you get pillarboxes either side which is rubbish as you're forced to play in 16:9 as others have mentioned. Graphics look bland to me. textures are detailed and sharp but the colour processing doesn't do the game justice. The lighting makes up for it somewhat.

I found the lack of ambience very boring though. there's no sense of occasion like there is in Alien Isolation, for example. From what I can tell from the demo I'd find this extremely bland even if they fixed the resolution to properly span a 2.39:1 monitor. It definitely feels like a console survival horror from 10 years ago but with semi modern graphics effects slapped on.

Glad I returned my copy...

Wow AWPC! You must have the patience of a saint to play through 11 hours again due to a save error... through a game like this!

You've given me a little hope since you seem to be the only person on planet Earth to maintain sanity (even after a save error causing you to replay ELEVEN hours again) and actually complete it.

Its not too bad if you like old school survival action horror. With AA disabled its stable pre patch the game does not really get going fully until you reach chapter 3 onwards anyway. Without spoiling for anyone who has not completed it there is a very good reason the game seems disjointed & not linked together in places ;) once you complete it then it all makes sense ;) & so many weapon unlocks to earn it gives it some replayability if your a fan.

If you like Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 2,3,4,5 on PC then this is a prettier version of those games & the best action survival horror game on PC since Silent Hill 5 in 2008 :D

I can see why some people get frustrated though but IMO its worth revisiting if you like action survival horror games.

I'm a little confused, you are comparing the likes of Silent Hill 2 and 3 which are arguably the greatest survival horror games ever made, then contradicting yourself by saying 'Best action survival horror game since Silent Hill 5', which in all honesty doesn't say much as the game sucked.

If you play this from start to finish you will see the elements it contains which are very similar to those earlier games almost 1:1 similar in fact!

Silent Hill 5 IMO was a decent atmospheric game on PC.

Its all personal opinion anyway does it really matter what anyone thinks good or bad  some people (like me) want games like they were years ago lengthy, SP only experiences with all content included at launch but unless PC games become £55-60 thats not going to happen so you get £39.99 games with season passes like this one. Same amount of money more or less just spread over 2 releases & optional if you want to buy the extra content. I would prefer to get all the content at launch but games are not rising with inflation if they were your looking @ £70-80 each (COD:AW is £70 if you want all content next week).

This game was poor technically at launch so a lot of people never gave it much time now its much better. But its still a survival action horror title with minimal puzzles & belongs in the early 2000s but has very good gfx in places & strong sound design. I am surprised Bethesda funded this game over 4 years must have cost a lot to make the artwork alone is very complex most levels do not contain plain locations at all there is a lot of unique artwork/textures in most rooms that with the advanced lighting engine FX & smoke shader FX combines to give this game a very strong atmosphere.

If it were rebranded before release as a direct sequel to Resident Evil 4 few people would complain ;) as its a game which belongs in that era but has more modern gfx & modern action based gameplay.
