The Evolution of Game Controllers.

I agree with the PS2 Pad, I managed to game for a full generation without any complaints about analogue placements. Wasnt till the PS3 was born that the complaints came rolling in about it's placement:p

I remember this quite well:

How times change! Think of trying to play Uncharted 2 or Gears of War with only 2 buttons and no analogue! :o

Kids these days, don't know they're born! :p

I wouldn't say that was the case. I would say it was more to do with the arrival of the 360 controller.

Yes, I have to agree. I spent years playing on a PS2 and then when I bought my 360 it was instantly more comfortable to use. It wasn't as if the PS2 controller was horrible or anything, I just found the 360 more accommodating. I hardly have the biggest hands in the world but the 360 pad just lets you spread your hands out more and I must say I do very much prefer the triggers of the 360 pad over the Dual Shock 3 of my PS3. Minus points go to the 360's D-pad though as it's absolutely shocking.

I had one of those but used it on my Amiga. There was a few games that actually used 2 buttons on the Amiga.

The ones where the cables connect to the side of the pad were worse :p

Question.
How can it be the best with such hideous analogue stick placement?

I dunno about best to date, but in the PS2 days you wouldn't of known any better on analogue stick placement, It only became hideous when the 360 pad came out.

Same, i never had any problems with the original ps1/ps2 design, then i got the controller s for the original xbox (the re-designed, smaller standard controller for those that don't remember) and just found the placement so much better. I recently picked myself up a ps3, this being the fist time ive actually used a playstation style pad in a long time it made me rage as i was so used to the xbox/xbox 360 placement, which i now think is far better for some games. I still find it awkward to play some games with the ps3 pad now, resistance, killzone etc.

Also recently bought crash bandicoot 3 and stuck it on my psp, i found those controls pretty awkward, although i can't remember if that supported analogue sticks on the ps1?
