The Expanse

Im probably making it up but I'm sure i read somewhere that the director didn't want to have to use prosthetics to age up the characters seeing that the last 3 books are set 20 odd years in the future.

I could be completely wrong but it seems plausible
There is a significant time skip where the series ended in the books before the next part of the story.

I think as you say the directors etc thought they couldn't do that well at the time given either they'd need to redo a significant part of the story to avoid the skip being that long, or put the primary cast in prosthetics or specialist makeup for the entire duration of the last 3 seasons, and that would have to be very well done and consistent which makes if much harder and more expensive to do than say a couple of quick scenes/flashforwards etc or if it only involved secondary characters who would only show up in the background.
Not to mention most actors really don't like wearing that level of makeup for long periods of time, and it can become a health issue for them as it would be months of filming per year.

I hope the y do go back to it at some point, even as just a trio of movies, but failing that the audiobooks are pretty well done.

Ive probably said it already but listening to the books after watching the series is so good :p
Lets you put the "future" ones in to a better visualisation too.

Definitely got into it from the first episode personally but I also found I lost interest somewhere around season 3 or 4 I forget now and couldn't get back into it.

I think I preferred the bit more grounded and less expansive hah plot from the early bit of the show.

for me it was the other way round, tried to watch it from the start and lost interest, then happened to watch a season 3 episode and was gripped

From what I remember the first half of season 3 was excellent, but if I recall it started to lose me towards the end and I couldn't get into season 4.

Yeah I found all the proto-whatsit and the super cheesy cop guy pretty boring. The political stuff is more interesting, and the later series in general.

The Tv series is let down by some really weak casting, much preferred reading the books tbh.

This is my second go round, i'll give it one more episode which will be the 4th but it's sent me to sleep twice already.

I like me some sci-fi, and I've wanted to like Foundation, got through 1 season, and it didn't improve in S2 (boring), I tried with Silo , same thing, weak stories dragged out over too many episodes. 3 body problem I enjoyed, Severance isn't half as clever as it thinks it is and is abit overrated but entertains, loving Fallout. Westworld, great S1 then destroyed it. I don't think I can recall anything more boring and drawn out than The Man In The High Castle, what an antidote to insomnia that was. :D

But Devs was better than all of them.

There's a few good shows but there's a hell of a lot of dreck.

Have you watched Babylon 5?
It's a large commitment and it takes a long time to get going....
