The Expanse

I know some of you were aware that Boom! Studios did a Kickstarter with the original writers of the Expanse to create a 3 part story spanning the 30 years between Babylon's Ashes (Book 6 and Season 6 of the TV show) and Persepolis Rising (Book 7). I love The Expanse and managed to pledge at the "Inners Edition" waayyyy back in March 2023 so it has been a while.

They released it in 3 waves and the final one just arrived so I thought some people in here would like to see what they sent. Some of it is the Red Edition and some of the stuff was just stretch add-ons provided FOC as stretch funding goals were reached. The things received were:

  • 3 Volume Hardcover of the Dragon Tooth story - Inners edition came with embossed/embellished hardcovers, red foil on edges, signed by authors and individually slipcased
  • Red Collectible Metal Box with MCRN detailing - this allows storage of the 3 slipcased volumes in their slipcases
  • 12x Individual Volumes (12x comic versions of the 3 volumes)
  • Metal embossed bookmarks
  • Rocinante Beanie
  • 3x Patches
  • 5x Coins in box (Rocinante, MCRN, UN, Transport Union and Laconia )
  • Signed print (by Steven Strait, Dominque Tipper ands Wes Adams)

Anyways, the story is good and fills that gap. Enjoy some images:

Those goodies look great!

My dream would be for Larian studios to pick up this IP and do a Baldurs Gate 3 style game with the Expanse universe.

That's pretty cool. Are the three books like graphic novels?

Yeah, sorry I should have taken some images of the inside... I posted a while back when volume 1 arrived:

The story is pretty good and, as I have recently started book 7, it does fill in the blanks a little.

The only weird bit is that Alex isn't in the Dragon Tooth books (follows on from the TV show) but it's easily ignored TBH... Will also help if they ever did do the last books on TV (unlikely I know)

They really are... Part of me was expecting cheap crap but they did deliver on this one.

It does baffle me that they cancelled this show. I swear it's still very popular.
It was popular but IIRC they cancelled it at a point where it made sense to cancel it for a while.

There is a time jump of about 30 years between where they stopped and the next book in the series, so they'd have to do some serious age makeup for all the returning cast and they'd have to be wearing it all the time, they would also need pretty much a complete new bunch of sets including a lot of planetary ones as only a handful of sets from the TV show would be able to be reused as was/with minor modifications.
Basically they'd almost be starting from scratch for the next TV season regardless of when it got/gets made.

I'm hoping in a few years time they'll film the rest of the books, either as some new seasons or a series of films

For those that don't know S.A Corey have started at least one new book series and so far the first book is pretty good.

Do you mind me asking how much it all cost?

Not at all - Total cost was $466 so about £375 but that did include a couple of extras I paid for (Origins Softcover, Expanse Softcover and the additional coins and box) as well as shipping.

So what was the point of the build up of the story about strange aliens that revived the child, and the machines on that planet if there was nothing after that for 30 years.. I'm not a reader, maybe I shall have to explore the audio books.

I am only about 100 pages into Book 7 (the first after the 30 year break) however I believe the revived child story (Strange Dogs novella) is a prelude to Duarte looking to become immortal. Duarte was the Admiral that led the defection of a large part of the MCRN through the Laconia gate and then blockaded it for the 30 years so no one can get in out. Book 7 then picks up from this after the 30 year "break"
