The F1 2014 season

I think Chilton will stay at Marussia.

I think Van Der Garde could end up at Sauber with his money, in which case i think Gutierrez will swap with him otherwise both will stay where the are for next year.

The second Caterham seat is between Ericsson and Kovaleinan... Guess that's whether Ericsson has enough backing.

really?

I know there are rumors about Ericsson, but he has been in GP2 for many years and tbh hasn't really taken that step up imo

as for Kovalainen he has lost all credibility after his dismal performance at Lotus (he was pretty poor too at Renault and McLaren)

as for Sauber, not sure VDG has more money than Gutierez or Sirotkin. Also Gutierez has shown improvement in 2nd half, whereas VDG has not been convincing at Caterham, although he had some good moments they were few and outnumbered by idiocy and lack luster performances

I thought Valsechi may be thinking about going elsewehere after he didn't get the seat when Kimi was out, and with Maldonado at Lotus he has no future there. Valsechi has proven track record in GP2 and has some limited F1 experience

And Da Costa has talent, and Red Bull may want to hedge their bets with Riccardo who shows pace in quali but really not convincing in race, so still an unknown quantity. RBR did make a deal with Ricciardo @ HRT to give him some F1 experience

anyway not saying you are wrong, as I am only guessing just explaining my line of thought

Is it bad that I genuinely couldn't care less who fills these seats (with the possible exception of Sauber)? I know its not their fault, but Marussia and Caterham are nothing but insignificant grid slot fillers driven by money backed amateurs.

I agree, he certainly wouldn't be my choice but he definitely seems to be in with a shout of the seat.

But he does seem well regarded by Caterham, and he won't be there to win them races... At a time when so many changes are being brought in someone who the team trust and can help develop the car could be invaluable.

Gutierrez is the better driver but I don't think that is Saubers main concern at the moment (they have just signed Sutil:p) VDG's father in law is very rich and there were rumours of him wanting to invest in a team... Could be that if this Russian money has fell through Sauber might be willing to take him up on it.

To be honest I think Sutil and Van Der Garde is one of the least inspiring line ups possible, but that's current F1 :(

Valsecchi's GP2 record isn't great, he won the title at the 5th try against not the greatest competition. I really don't rate him that highly and although the Lotus/Kovalainen thing was handled very poorly, he handled it equally as poorly.

Da Costa is off to DTM this season, they have given Kvyat the nod and i expect they'll only go looking for another driver in F1 if he bombs or next season if JEV is to be replaced... They don't really have any upcoming seats in RBR as it stands.

No of course not, this is purely speculation on everyones account... It's what makes it fun in a way, who knows really how the teams are measuring up these decisions :)

didn't know that da Costa was now in DTM

I agree that if sauber have Sutil and VDG it is truly uninspiring

also agree Valsechi has not set the world on fire, I think that applies to a lot of GP2 drivers, which is supposed to be the feeder series. in recent years, I have been more impressed by drivers out of the World Renault Series tbh

How has Gary Paffett not managed to get a drive in F1 yet? He'll be 50 if waits around for McLaren.

Have his F1 test times been really poor or something?

He's a form DTM champion and 4 time runner up. Which is better than most (former) F1 drivers have managed in that series.

Drivers at that point are at the end of their careers and merely looking for a bit more fun. Plus, it's much easier to adapt to a whole new series when you're younger than it is when you're older. Just look at how Schumacher struggled (relatively speaking) when he returned to the same series (albeit with cars still fairly different from when he retired).

Paffet does hours and hours in the simulator, so McLaren would know technically whether he'd be up to scratch as a driver, and presumably they haven't seen enough to place him in one of their cars, or even farm him off to a Marussia.

The Beeb published the list of 2014 F1 rounds that they could be bothered to fight for the live broadcast of:

30 March: Malaysia
11 May: Spain
8 June: Canada
6 July: Britain
24 August: Belgium
7 September: Italy
5 October: Japan
12 October: Russia
23 November: Abu Dhabi

No Bahrain and China, which is good - no point wasting a live broadcast on either of those.

I wonder if it followed the same rules as before, where BBC pick 3, then Sky pick 3, then they pick one each for the rest.

In previous years BBC have picked Silverstone, Monaco and the final race of the season as their first 3, but as they don't have Monaco this year it suggests they changed their tact. They still haven't chosen the first race of the season, strangely?
