The F1 2014 season

The nose isnt too bad, but damn they could have made it a lot nicer.

I wanted to hurl the first time I saw that Williams mock up (I realise it wont end up looking like that)

I'm liking one of the new rules brought in.

Since they brought in the quali rule stating that you have to get back to the pits under your own power, they've extended that to include the cool-down lap after the race.

About time too!

No mention of what the penalty will be though. Time penalty? Grid Penalty? Or exclusion as per qualifying?

Full WMSC press release from the FIA is available here

Also discusses was how the 5 second penalties can work. You can stop for 5 seconds in your pit box, and then they can do the normal stop requirements after those 5 seconds. Drive through and 10 second stop-go penalties are unchanged.

So it's about 1/3 - 1/4 of the time required for a drive through, depending on track.

And teams have 6 curfew jokers this year instead of the 2 of 2013. Just due to the new tech involved. Seems like the FIA are expecting a lot of late nights for the teams. Good good. More engine failures please. :D

Rumours about Sam Michael as new Team Principal at McLaren..

:( Source?

edit- just read on f1technical :|

Hope it's not true, I don't think it will happen, he doesn't have the conviction needed to be a team principle imo.

Have you seen the proposed rule changes for 2015?

Ability to buy in spec suspension and brake ducts - Silly.
Another 10kg heavier - not good.
No tyre warmers - Hmmm....

Although, tyre warmers aren't exactly a budget buster. They last for years and aren't hugely expensive.

There were talks of teams overheating the tyres whilst in the warmers to try and gain an advantage; so it wouldn't surprise me if that has something to do with it.

I see it as a bit of a non-issue anyway if Pirelli change the compounds, as they mentioned previously, to counter the lack of warmers.

I like the idea of getting rid of tyre warmers. It'll be more like motogp (where they do have warmers) with drivers being cautious in the opening laps. He with biggest balls will gain the most, or end up in the scenery.

No tyre warmers would mean pitting losses you minutes, not seconds.

Bad idea tbh. But given the FIAs attitude recently, they could mandate square tyres and 3 wheels for all we know.

Agreed. If McLaren are to improve they will need a Team Principal with huge ballz. He'll have to take some strong decisions.

I actually think that Whitmarsh can do the job fine. But he just needs to be told by his superiors that he needs to come up with a plan to beat RBR. Give him a time limit and if he can't achieve this within say 2 years, someone else will be given a chance.

In all jobs (and that includes sport), team bosses/managers are given targets to achieve. It would be interesting to know what targets Whitmarsh has been given. Is the aim to get a driver in the top 8 in the WDC or get a WCC finsh of 5th place. I'd love to know.

Personally the 10k Is a good thing, so that taller drivers arent discrimated sgainst vs the new heavier turbo engines

Losing tyre warmers is going to be a disaster for the "show" surely. Cars are going to be cruising around tracks for a few laps so as not to tear up cold tyres?

Rumours this AM that Mclaren are trying to install Brawn for March '14, but still making tentative steps re old Merc contract etc

March '14.
If they can get him in, in 3 months, this could be good for McLaren.
A new approach would be good for them.

I'm not sure how this would work, though.
McLaren are very much run like a corporate company - lots of internal rules and regulations and expects all its employees, to tow the company line.
If Brawn enters McLaren, it seems that he will be going back to similar constraints as in Merc, where he doesnt have the final say.

Newey left McLaren for exactly the same reason - ie. he had too many constraints and couldnt run things the way he wanted. It's McLaren's way or the highyway.

Also, Brawn was a firm believer in No.1/No.2 driver system, so how would this go down at McLaern, if Brawn were to request that Alonso or Vettel arrive as No.1 driver, in 2015 or 2016.

Are McLaren desperate enough, now, to make some fundamental changes in the way their management works?

Maybe, but at least it's bringing another element of skill back to F1.

Managing the transition from cold tyres to optimum temp is something that can be seen from grass roots level so would be good to see this mirrored at the pinnacle of the sport, IMO.
