The F1 2014 season

In all jobs (and that includes sport), team bosses/managers are given targets to achieve. It would be interesting to know what targets Whitmarsh has been given. Is the aim to get a driver in the top 8 in the WDC or get a WCC finsh of 5th place. I'd love to know.

I'd find it hard not to believe that at a team like McLaren, the only target is to win both championships. Anything else is a failure. At the absolute worst, top 3.

Last year was a complete disaster for the team, and for that, Whitmarsh should go as ultimately he's responsible.

Losing tyre warmers is going to be a disaster for the "show" surely. Cars are going to be cruising around tracks for a few laps so as not to tear up cold tyres?

To be fair, they manage fine in GP2 and I'm pretty sure there are no tyre warmers in that series.

They've managed it in America since the dawn of time. As said, it's a test of skill and it's not like there's a switch between cold and hot - the grip will gradually increase over the pit-out lap, and there'll be a middle point between someone on cold tyres getting up to speed and someone on worn tyres losing grip. It'll add another element to strategy and skill, we'll get more variation. All good for me. I don't want to see drivers wandering around a track each pitting within 2 laps of each other. Give me more of what Lotus did please, throwing in a curveball.

Saw this, made me laugh

March '14.

I'm not sure how this would work, though.
McLaren are very much run like a corporate company - lots of internal rules and regulations and expects all its employees, to tow the company line.
If Brawn enters McLaren, it seems that he will be going back to similar constraints as in Merc, where he doesnt have the final say.

Who ever is installed as the leader in the pitlane (whatever title you want to associate with that) then yes he will have the final say otherwise it will never work (and also you can look at his many successes in different teams as well, which you cant say is the case with many in recent past for McLaren)

Newey left McLaren for exactly the same reason - ie. he had too many constraints and couldnt run things the way he wanted. It's McLaren's way or the highyway.

Newey was never in that position to start with, so no he wouldnt have. RD was always the team leader etc etc when Newey was there.

Also, Brawn was a firm believer in No.1/No.2 driver system, so how would this go down at McLaern, if Brawn were to request that Alonso or Vettel arrive as No.1 driver, in 2015 or 2016..

No he isnt - he spent the whole year that Brawn (team) existed stating and re-stating that JB and Barrichello where equal

Bennetton never had an equal to Schumi in the first place, and neither did Ferrari so they are not fair comparisons

Maybe, but at least it's bringing another element of skill back to F1.

Managing the transition from cold tyres to optimum temp is something that can be seen from grass roots level so would be good to see this mirrored at the pinnacle of the sport, IMO.

You dont get Strikers playing at FB in the Premiership or defenders playing in Striking positions in general either like you do in the lower leagues, so Im not sure why this should be required in F1 either.

Nearly every driver up and down the pitlane have already proven what they can do (even if its a case of trying to polish a rough diamond) no reason to do it multiple times every race

To be fair, they manage fine in GP2 and I'm pretty sure there are no tyre warmers in that series.

I didnt realise GP2 was now the self proclaimed pinnacle of the sport (:

I don't believe loosing tyre warmers would be a problem at all. It happens in other series without too much of an issue.

Some of you are judging it on todays tyres. Obviously without tyre warmers the tyre company would use a compound and construction better suited to it.

Eric Boullier just left Lotus, set to be confirmed as Team Principal at McLaren.

Rated very highly by the journo's.

What a strange analogy.

Have they? There was me thinking that money was more important than skill and proven career path in F1. Anything that potentially puts distance between those who have bought their seat and those who are there on merit is a good thing IMO.

I think that is great. Boullier has done a very good job at Lotus, and think he is the right man. Great to see him leave the nonsense at Lotus, he deserves better. Maybe if the newbie driver doesn't work out we will see Boullier be able to get Hulk at McLaren in 2015

Hopefully McLaren can sort out a major sponsor. The loss of Vodafone and its 70m funding cannot be good regardless of what their PR dept says
